Freedom of Press

(akram saqib, sahiwal)

World is fond of such slogans as are chanted by the owners of the media tycoons. Freedom of press, right to say and so on is the favorite phrases of electronic and pres media. It is not a bad thing to have freedom of speech but there are some heinous features of this freedom. The media has become the most obnoxious blackmailer. Everywhere in the world we see and we find that the media personnel are enjoying amenities of life. They are richer than the mill owners and enjoy the privilege of VIP. It is not due to their integrity and honesty but due to their fear.

The reporters and correspondents of more than 80 % of electronic and print media are habitual blackmailers. They are in search of weaknesses of the people in the helm of affairs and responsible administrators. Man is to err but media is to blur. Media is free and independent almost everywhere in the world. This freedom is often exploited. The media does not take care of national values and international norms but prefer income. The overt interests are misusing media everywhere. The world powers and intelligence agencies are using media as a propaganda tool.

There are evidences that journalists work as spies and intrude into the internal affairs of states. There are many merits of freedom of press but its demerits are the most. A responsible and up to the mark media as regards the moral values and code of conduct is in fact the real media. The freedom must be used for aiding the poor and downtrodden not for propagation of the interests of the rich. Freedom of press in necessary but press and press men should not sell their conscience for the sake of few pennies.

Such mediocre journalists put their homeland at stakes and earn dishonest money. There should be strict compliance of the code of ethics and national values of the states and people where the media man is working.
