The Eid Ul Fitr is celebrated on the first day of the
Shawwal, the month that comes after the month of Ramadan (a popular
festival of the Muslims) in the Islamic calendar. It marks the end of
the Ramadan and allows the Muslims to end their fast which they had
started at the beginning of Ramadan. The word ‘Fitr’ means to break,
which indicates that the Muslims break their fast and evil habits, thus
feeling the joy of attaining a sense of spirituality after fasting.
Fasting is forbidden on this day, as it marks the end of the month long
fast of Ramadan. One is encouraged to rise early and partake of some
dates or a light, sweet snack. One should bath, as always, but with the
remembrance that this is a special day. Muslims are encouraged to dress
in their best clothes, new if possible. There is a special Eid prayer
that is performed in congregation. The prayer consists of two rak'at,
followed by a khutba, or sermon. The prayer is not obligatory, but
Muslims are encouraged to take time off and attend the prayer. This
gives an opportunity to join with other Muslims in the celebration.

There is diversity in the eid-ul-fitr traditions and customs of
celebrating Eid due to Muslims scattered in different parts of world.
While Iraqis and Palestinians embark on the festivities by having
sweetmeat called klaicha, Egyptian Muslims go to Mosques with an empty
stomach and later on have an elaborate luncheon with a fish delicacy in
the middle of it.
For Muslims all across the country, this is the end of fasting period.
Thus they rejoice, not in happiness of the end of fasting period but to
thank Allah for giving the endurance to complete them successfully. So,
be it India or Indonesia, Pakistan or USA, the spirit remains the same.
All wear new clothes and offer prayers to Allah by reciting Namaz.
