“Palestinian Cause at Risk: Reassessing the Impact of Hamas' Aggressive Approach"

(Kishwer Baqar, Karachi)

Now, since it has been revealed upon everyone that the recent Hamas instigation in the Palestinian-Israel conflict did not do any good to the Palestinian cause. Instead, a humanitarian crisis has unfolded, marked by mass bloodshed and brutal killings of Gaza residents, people are attempting to decipher the truth in unconventional ways. Some claim Hamas is an Israeli organization, turning the attack into a conspiracy theory. Some are sure that 9/11 was a false flag operation by USA and this one is similar. The confusion persists, and even I struggle to discern the truth. Despite uncertainty, apparent facts suggest that Hamas has worked for the Palestinian cause, but many countries consider it a terrorist organization.

My aim here is to highlight that even if Hamas genuinely supports Palestine, their attack on Israel goes against Islamic laws and principles, the Quran and the Sunnah. According to Quran and Sunnah Muslims are supposed to keep from aggressive and intimidating action unless they are powerful enough to do so. Even an estimation of the power before any hostile action and political philosophy is also provided in Quran and the life of Rasool Allah (S.A.W).

“Now Allah has lightened your burden, for He knows that there is weakness in you. So, if there are a hundred steadfast among you, they will overcome two hundred. And if there be one thousand, they will overcome two thousand, by Allah’s Will. And Allah is with the steadfast.” (8:66)
Below is the explanation according to Tafsir Ibn e Kathir:
“الَـنَ خَفَّفَ اللَّهُ عَنكُمْ (Surah Al-Anfal 8:66)
(Now Allah has lightened your (task)), until يَغْلِبُواْ مِاْئَتَيْنِ
(they shall overcome two hundred...)
Allah lowered the number of adversaries that Muslims are required to endure, and thus, made the required patience less, compatible to the decrease in numbers."

Thereafter, if Muslims were half as many as their enemy, they were not allowed to run away from them. If the Muslims were fewer than that, they were not obligated to fight the disbelievers and thus allowed to avoid hostilities."
The verse emphasizes a consideration for the strength and capability of the Muslim community. If they are significantly weaker than their adversaries, they are not obligated to proceed with hostility and bloodshed. This reflects a pragmatic approach, acknowledging the practical limitations and weaknesses of the Muslim community at that time.
Hamas couldn't possibly triumph over Israel alone. The reality is that it's not just challenging Israel; it's essentially declaring war against all of its alliances including the U.S. and many other Western powers. Hamas lacks the capacity for such a colossal undertaking. When they instigate conflicts or launch missiles without assessing the potential reactions from Israel and its allies, they carelessly harm their own cause – which is not Palestinian or the whole Muslim Ummah wants.
Consider the strategic wisdom of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). During a vulnerable period, he intended to perform Umrah from Medina to Makkah, but faced with the strength of the Kufar from Makkah, at the place of Hudaybiyyah, he wisely but surprisingly for Sahaba chose not to proceed. Instead, he entered into the renowned Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, an agreement that seemingly favored the opposition. However, Allah declared that this treaty is actually the “Victory” of Momineen in Surah Al-Fateh.

إِنَّا فَتَحْنَا لَكَ فَتْحًۭا مُّبِينًۭا ١
Indeed, We have granted you a clear triumph ˹O Prophet˺
Despite its appearance, this agreement granted the Muslims the time and space needed to prepare for their ultimate mission. In the end, when Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) entered Mecca, the city surrendered without any significant conflict.

Similarly, during his time in Medina, when not in a strong political or defensive position, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) engaged in contracts with the Jewish and Christian communities in the region. This pragmatic approach exemplifies the importance of strategic thinking, even in the face of apparent concessions and compromises, to achieve larger, long-term goals.

The most viable and peaceful solution for the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is to declare the area a global zone accessible to everyone and not ruled by anyone. The United Nations should administer it, with a UN peacekeeping force providing security. This approach is crucial as continued conflict benefits neither party. Even if Israel gains complete control, organizations like Hamas may persist, leading to ongoing instability and humanitarian crisis on both sides. Considering the holy significance of Palestine to Christians, Muslims, and Jews, encompassing a substantial portion of the global population, declaring it a common or global zone is a humanitarian and practical solution. In an era of interdependence, peaceful coexistence by means of compromises, negotiations, table-talks and diplomacy is only viable approach. Despite diverse identities, we are all earthlings and humans, highlighting the need for a cooperative attitude to address this longstanding issue.
