The Beauty and Hospitality of Malaysia attracts 10.6 million tourist in 1st Quarter 2026 I

Malaysia is a country with so many beauties, excellent and unique tradition of hospitality, attractive and colorful culture , tolerate and peaceful atmosphere that it is a source of attraction for foreign tourists. Government of Malaysia and its ministry of tourism providing every possible facility to tourists.
It is a very good an encouraging news that Malaysia achieved a record breaking 10.65 million tourists arrival in the first quarter of 2026, making a robust 5.4 % increase over the previous year and the strongest start to the year in the country’s history. This performance is driven by Chinese New Year travel, increased movements of . tourists and number of flights increased phenomenally. Many thousands tourists arrived from Singapore and China. February 2026 alone received 3.47 million tourists. Total arrival in ASEAN countries during this period was 7.49 million Malaysian share was 3.47 million. Singapore remained Malaysia’s largest market, accounting for nearly half of total arrivals between January and March, with 5.14 million visitors, up 3.9 % year on year.

By region, Asean arrivals rose 3.1% y-o-y to 7.49 million, while East Asia climbed more than 19% to 1.81 million. European arrivals increased more than 9% to 500,284, marking the first time the region surpassed the half-a-million mark in the first quarter.Among European markets, Türkiye posted the strongest growth at 77.3%, followed by Ukraine at 35.3% and Poland at 23.7%.
In contrast, Middle East arrivals fell more than 27% y-o-y to 28,272, making it the weakest-performing region during the quarter.
Meanwhile, Malaysia added 26 new international routes during the period, comprising 20 scheduled services and six charter routes linking China and Hong Kong with Malaysia.
Another interesting point is that twelve airlines introduced an additional ninety five international flights per week during the quarter, while Xiamen Airlines increased its Nanjing–Kuala Lumpur service to daily flights in March.
The government had stepped up engagement with international tourism players, including at the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2026 in Cebu and the ITB Berlin travel trade exhibition in March.
German flag carrier Lufthansa has also confirmed it will launch direct Frankfurt–Kuala Lumpur flights beginning Oct 25, which would further strengthen Malaysia’s access to the European market.

In an effort to diversify Malaysia's economy and reduce its dependency on exports, the government pushed to increase tourism in Malaysia. This led tourism to become Malaysia's second largest source of foreign exchange income. In 2022, tourism contributed 14% to Malaysia's overall GDP.
The government agency in charge of promoting tourism in Malaysia is Tourism Malaysia or the Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board (MTPB). On 20 May 1987, the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Tourism (MOCAT) was established and TDC moved to this new ministry. TDC existed from 1972 to 1992, when it became the Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board (MTPB), through the Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board Act, 1992.
In 2007, Malaysia launched its most notable tourism campaign titled "Malaysia Truly Asia". This campaign was launched in conjunction with Malaysia's 50th year of independence and was heavily promoted and advertised. It exceeded expectations and was a massive success, chartering the arrivals of 20.97 million tourists.
In 2025, Kuala Lumpur  and Johor Bahru were named among the top 10 destinations in Asia with the highest number of repeat visitors, according to AGODA.  In the same year, Malaysia received approximately 26.6 million international tourist arrivals from its main source markets, the vast majority originating from Asia (about 23.7 million visitors, or 89.1%), while Western markets, Europe, Northern America . as well as Australia and New Zealand accounted for only about 2.2 million arrivals (8.2%). Other regions, including the Middle East and Africa, accounted for a comparatively smaller share of arrivals. Major source markets included Singapore (35.1%), China, Indonesia, Thailand and India, while the largest Western source markets were Australia, the United Kingdom , the United States of America, France and Germany.
Most nationalities can enter Malaysia without a visa and are normally issued 30, 60, or 90-day entry permit stamps. Some nationalities that are not eligible to enter without a visa can get a tourist visa on arrival; other nationalities must apply for a visa in advance. Most notably, holders of Israeli or Serbia-Montenegro passports are not allowed to visit Malaysia without separate, prior approval from the Home Ministry
Most international flights land at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) ; Air Asia flights now use the new LCC terminal, a 20km road transfer away from the main KLIA terminal. KLIA's predecessor, the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah in Subang Kuala Lumpur near Kuala Lumpur  handles chartered and turboprop aircraft.
Other airports handling international flights are Johor Bahru, Langkawi, Malacca and Penang, plus Kota Kinabalu (Sabah) and Kuching (Sarawak).
National carrier Malaysia Airlines (MAS) has an extensive worldwide network coverage and regularly ranks high in airline quality assessments, while no-frills low-cost carrier Air Asia now covers an ever-expanding set of neighbouring destinations including Cambodia, Indonesia, Macau, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Direct sleeper train services operated by the State Railway of Thailand connects Bangkok and Butterworth near Penang while Keretapi Tanah Melayu (Malaysian Railways) runs trains between Hat Yai  (Thailand) and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). Both trains cross the border at Padang Besar where Thai and Malaysia immigration formalities are all conveniently done in the station. There is also a less used eastern route from Hat Yai to Thai border town Sungai Kolok, but there are no through trains to the nearby Malaysian station at Wakaf Bahru (near Kota Bharu).
 Comfortable overnight sleeper and somewhat misnamed daytime "express" trains also connect Singapore with Kuala Lumpur and Kota Bharu. ( Continued)
