MAGIC IN ISLAM

(Muniza Wasi, KARACHI)

Magic and sorcery is prohibited in Islam.

The basic reason is that a Muslim worships Allah and in any time of difficulty, hardship and any need he turns towards Allah begging for his mercy and the fulfillment of desire. Now in magic and sorcery the help is sought from other aspects and basically Satan (devil) is pleaded and many steps are taken to complete magic spells that are certainly prohibited in Islam. Some examples of the deeds are that the magician has to go against the rules and obligations of Islam. He does not offer prayers, has to keep himself dirty and untidy, praise Satan, consume prohibited things in Islam such as pork, wine, blood, etc., and go against all Islamic principles. He even has to abstain a bath. The magic charms are usually chanted at nighttime on certain necessary objects; sometimes on a skull, an owl's hide and meat, goat's skull, strands of hair, blood, etc. The magician usually sits in a dark and dingy room or at someone’s grave in the graveyard. They sit chanting the magic words and return before dawn.

First, a Muslim can never praise Satan as he is the worst enemy of men and when someone acts against Allah's orders to such an extent he gets expelled from the circle of Islam. This punishment is so severe that a Muslim should never even think about getting mixed up with evil things like magic. If a Muslim himself does not perform the magic, but acquires the help of a magician the same is the obligation. Astronomy in which the future is foretold is also a branch of magic as quoted in the sayings of Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad S.A.W., it is also prohibited and the Muslim who goes to a fortune-teller is cursed and for 40 days his prayers are not accepted by Allah.

Magic is usually used to tease someone and for acquiring wrong desires which itself is wrong. Allah does not like the person who likes to destroy others and plan for their destruction by such means either. Allah is the most merciful and the powerful one. He should be pleaded to in any circumstances. He is our only God while the magicians believe in many idols that they worship and ask help from. They can be successful in certain attempts if its Allah's will, but they will be punished and that's for certain as it is clear from the orders of Allah.
