THAR FAMINE
Drought in Pakistan’s Southern Thar desert region has killed more than 130
children in the past few days , but while local and international concerns have
focused on the lack of rain and famine there are more structural issues that
contributed to the deaths.
The fact of drought is not unusual in the region . On Thar life depends on
seasonal rain. Bad governance , negligence , poor infrastructure , lack of
medical facilities and avoidable food storages have all exacerbated the problems
caused by drought .
In our neighbouring country , whenever such a situation occurs the government
take proper action by sending huge amounts of food grains to save the people
from hunger and malnutrition but in Pakistan the government awakes only when the
calamity has struck and people have died in large numbers as in the case of Thar
famine. I think the SC should ask why the Sindh government was in hibernation
when children were dying on a daily basis because of non-availability of food ,
drinking water and medicine..
Drought in Thar is not a new phenomenon it may be occurs after two or five years
due to climate change but this time it was severe. Winter season also affecting
agricultural growth Sindh government take action because the condition became
worse. This is how democracy works.
