Chop the vegetables into small pieces. Wash the dhal thoroughly. Put the dhal and vegetables in a pan together and barely cover with water. Simmer gently until cooked. Season with pepper, turmeric and salt. Add coconut and cook for a further 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and add molasses. In another pan fry the mustard seeds, chillis and curry leaves for a few minutes. Add to the vegetabl¬es, mix well and serve with plain boiled rice.
