Mental health is the most neglected issue here in Pakistan. According to estimation, 35% of Pakistanis suffer from anxiety and depression which is caused by toxic family and friend relations, the feeling of not fitting in the society, the unstable political situation of Pakistan is giving rise to unemployment and poverty. Around 50 million people in Pakistan suffer from this disorder. Many of us suffer from mental illness but no proper healthcare system exists here in Pakistan, even our families don’t understand that it is a serious issue and it should be checked. The reason behind the increasing rate of mental illness in Pakistan is violence, poverty, unemployment, unhealthy lifestyle, gender discrimination and many more. Anxiety is highly recorded among young people aged 18-28 years. Women are suffering more from mental illness because the increasing number of rape and violence.
Mental illness includes depression, anxiety, stress, schizophrenia and many other disorders. A mental illness can make your life miserable and can cause problems in your daily life, such as at school or work or in relationships. The symptoms can be managed with medications and psychotherapy. The symptoms can be feeling confused, sad, tired, unable to focus, suicidal thoughts, withdrawal from friend circle or family, extreme feeling of fear and many more. Each disorder has its own symptoms.
The treatment to mental illness is to take good care of yourself, going for therapies, taking your medications or anti-depressants time to time. You can go for counselling sessions by any professional. Last but not the least is to reach out and speak out your heart to whom you trust, it can be your family or any of your friend.
Mental illness should be a priority for the government and for the people. The media should provide awareness for mental health and different psychologists should be invited for counselling sessions also talking kindly to others and listening to them may also help. The shortage of mental issues professionals in Pakistan is creating a massive treatment gap and because of that many people left untreated. It is also advised to create better incentives for the mental health professionals and doing efforts for providing a peaceful environment to the society to help in promoting mental as well as physical health.
