Encountering Disinformation in the Digital age
(Saleem Malik, Islamabad)
The conventional methods of entertainment and information are being replaced by technology in the digital age in which we live. On digital media platforms, there is a bombardment of information that is unchecked and unbalanced. The need to cultivate critical thinking skills and the ability to spot misleading material becomes crucial since millions of online users consume and distribute this volume of information without understanding the facts and figures. Proliferation of false information is a serious problem under these circumstances.
Disinformation is false information that is purposely distributed to deceive individuals and further certain covert objectives. Many people confuse misinformation with disinformation, however misinformation is something that happens as a result of an error and is not promoted consciously. The risk of disinformation on social media exists.
Social media disinformation poses a possible harm to people's personal lives, communities, and society. People should have a fundamental understanding of how social media functions and how to handle digital information in order to prevent disinformation, which may take many different forms, including fake news, bots distributing specific information, and several other unverified accounts that propagate sensation and misleading information.
The trustworthiness of the sources also crucial, therefore always double verify information to have a comprehensive understanding of the issue. We can prevent disinformation by promoting fact-checking information from numerous sources. Google and social media fact-checking tools, such as advanced reverse image search, chrome plugins and extensions, and Google Earth: Pinpoints eyewitness location, might be useful in confirming the facts.
The algorithms used by social media companies to find and delete false content are also becoming better. In order to combat disinformation, governments should also control internet material. They should create laws and rules that limit information sharing while preserving peoples' rights to free speech and expression.
The digital revolution has made disinformation a constant in our lives. However, if someone has knowledge, the capacity for critical thought, and a commitment to practicing responsible digital citizenship, they may navigate this maze of misinformation and come out as informed information consumers. By working together, we can develop an online space that is more moral, defends the truth, and upholds the principles of a civilized society.
