A Mother's Hope

(Muhammad Hassan Soomro , Karachi)

The darkest night has to end, and the sun will rise. An old woman was giving hope to herself while cleaning her son’s room. She always thought that her young son Ahmer would visit her soon after fulfilling his dreams. Ahmer was her only son and was studying at the university. His mother was a working woman. She worked in the field and paid all the fees for her son. Ahmer worked hard for four years, but when he reached his last year, he failed in mathematics. His mathematics teacher, Farooq, had a different mentality towards the people of the village; he did not like them. He believed that poor people did not have any right to get an education, that the poor were born to serve them.

When Ahmer failed for the first time in his mathematics paper, he thought that he had made some mistakes and that's why he couldn't pass the exam. He waited for six more months to attempt his paper again, and this time he stayed in Karachi and did not go to visit his mother. His mother thought that he could be busy, that's why he didn't come this time. In his four-year journey, he used to go home every six months, but in his third year, he couldn't visit his mother because he did not have money for the ticket. When his mother asked about the reason, he replied that he had some assignments, but actually, he started working in a restaurant as a waiter to pay his extra fees so his mother could be saved from extra burden. Ahmer's mother, Sakina, was a poor working woman who worked in the field to pay her son’s fees. Sakina was waiting for her son's return, but he did not come, and she sent some money to him, which she saved by working in the fields.

The season changed, and the new semester was about to end. Ahmer also prepared for his exam; this time, he gave more time to his studies as he planned that next year he would attempt the special exam for a government job. Ahmer took the exam; he was very satisfied with his hard work as he was hoping for the best result, but when the result was announced, he couldn't find his name among the toppers. He did not even find his name among the passed students. When he asked the reason and complained about the teacher, he did not receive any answer from the authorities. He became depressed after working hard, but he didn't lose hope. He knew that his mother was waiting for his success and that he was the only hope to change her life. Additionally, he was thinking that if he went to visit his village without a degree, what people would think about him, what his mother's reaction would be, and how he would explain his failure. He became very depressed and started smoking to reduce his stress. He encouraged himself and did not give up against the injustice, deciding to take the exam again. He didn't visit his village for two years for the very first time in his educational journey. His mother was upset and was trying to find the reason, but she didn't get any valid reason from Ahmer. The special exam was also conducted, and Ahmer could not appear in that exam because he failed one subject and didn't receive a degree for two years. He lost the job opportunity that could have changed his life and fulfilled his mother's dream, but he lost all opportunities because of his failure.

The winter arrived, and the weather became cold like Ahmer's life. He lost all charm and was just focusing on how to pass that paper this year. If he could not pass the exam this time, he would not be able to appear for the next two years as per the policy of the university. His mother was also tense because she had not only dreamt of his success, but she was also very excited about Ahmer's marriage. She sewed different clothes for his future wife. She planned to call all the relatives who were living far away and never came to visit them. She also planned to call all the rich people of her area who were not allowing Ahmer to go to the city and get a higher education. She faced many obstacles from these powerful people who were known as Wadheras, Choudaries, and Sardars. They were against education and never allowed any poor child to get a higher education. They aimed to restrict the poor villagers in the village so they could work for them. These rich people had a fear that if any poor child got an education, they would ask for their rights and would not follow them blindly. They also forced Ahmer's mother not to send him for higher education, but she went against them and sent her only child to get an education. These powerful people tried every possibility to stop them. Sometimes they tortured Ahmer's mother, sometimes they did not allow her to work in the fields, and sometimes they called her relatives to stop her, but she didn't listen to anyone and fought against all odds for her son's education.

The door opened, and Rubina, who was the neighbor of Sakina and lived next to her house, was in a hurry. She said to Sakina that her mobile had been ringing for one hour and that her son was calling her. She accepted the call and talked to Ahmer. Sakina forced Ahmer to visit the village as soon as possible because she had to arrange a meeting with a girl she liked for him. Ahmer promised his mother that after the result, he would come and meet with the girl. Sakina became happy after hearing that her boy accepted her decision without asking any questions. Ahmer asked for prayers from his mother and went to bed to sleep. The next day, he took his exam and was very relaxed because he attempted all the questions perfectly and was very sure that this time no one could fail him.

It was raining. Ahmer was sitting near the window and talking to his mother. He promised his mother that he would come to her in two days as his result would be announced tomorrow. Sakina started preparing to welcome her child. She planned to cook his favorite dish on that day and call his friends. She was very happy that her dream was coming true. Ahmer would graduate, and he would get engaged soon. She talked to Rozina's family. Rozina was the daughter of her neighbors. She was a very pretty and educated girl, and she had graduated from the private sector. She requested Rozina’s parents that they would do the engagement of Ahmer and Rozina next week as her son was coming from Karachi tomorrow. The next day, she was waiting for her son. She called Ahmer, but he didn't answer. She thought that maybe he was traveling, so he wasn't picking up her call. She waited long, but Ahmer did not come. Suddenly, she heard the siren of an ambulance. First, she thought that it came for her neighbor who was in critical condition for the last month. When the driver stopped at Sakina's gate, her life changed in seconds, and all her dreams vanished. After a while, she fell down. Her neighbors took her to the hospital, but she died. Sakina couldn't endure the shock of her only child Ahmer's death and died of a heart attack.

Last night, Ahmer was very excited that he was going home after a long time and would meet his mother. He bought some gifts for his mother and a ticket, but he never imagined that the coming morning would change his life totally. When the result was announced, he was marked as absent in the paper. He went to the university, met with the authorities, and gave them proof that he was present on that day, but the professor who had been failing him for the last two years did not believe him. The professor argued with him and wrote a letter to the management that Ahmer threatened him. Ahmer was a very good student, and he never misbehaved with any teacher, but he was blamed for something he could never imagine. Ahmer understood that this professor was not going to pass him as he had a different psychology towards the village people. Ahmer became depressed and went to his flat. After one hour, his mates found him hanged, and he was no more with them. It was not only his body that was hanging from the fan, but all the dreams, struggles of his mother, his hard work, his patience, his goals to work for the people of his village, and his mother's dreams. All the dreams vanished in just a few hours. After the shocking death of Ahmer, his mother Sakina also died, and a mother’s dream vanished. After that, no one sent their child for studies to the city.
