Iran can never have Nuclear Weapons
(Dr Saher Ghazali, Karachi)
“Iran can never have Nuclear Weapons”, we have heard this phrase again and again, but most of the people don’t understand this dilemma. Half of the Pakistani population think of this topic as a religious one, and the other half as an emotional one, but in reality it is a strategic and geopolitical situation. Let’s dive into the discussion, historically speaking Iran was an extremely west loving society until the regime change in April 1979. The islamic ideology based revolutionary movement started in January of 1978, but we are not here to discuss the revolution, so let’s carry on.
After the regime change in Iran, the culture in Iran took a 180° turn, the westernised society became a conservative and religious one overnight. The change was difficult yet imminent, to ensure the change the Iran’s revolutionary guards used every method, and even force to get their goal. Since 1979 Iran has portrayed itself as a strictly islamic society, hence gaining the sympathies of simple muslims around the world particularly from Pakistan. The emotional attachment comes from the Shiite community residing in Pakistan, as Iran is a Shia country, and the Supreme Leader of Iran is considered as the Imam for all Shias around the globe. The word of the imam is considered a rule, and must be obeyed at all costs.
In this religious and emotional struggle, the actual geopolitical effect of Iran having Nuclear Weapons not Nuclear power had been severely overlooked. There are many questions revolving around this issue, but the foremost is “Why does Iran even need nuclear weapons?” The answer is simple because of Israel. Even Though, Israel is not neighbouring Iran, there is always a “War of words” between the two regimes, stemming from the situation of Palestine, and now from Gaza. Recently, Israel attacked Iran by saying that they are building a nuclear weapon which is a threat to Israel, because of the terrorist activities of Iran against Israel and other nations, like funding Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, or Houthis in Yemen.
Israel is a War criminal, and there are a lot of bad sentiments about them in Muslim world as well as humanitarian nations. If we just forget Israel for a moment and ponder upon the situation, Iran wants to have nuclear power while the world is against it. No, that's not true. The world does not want Iran to have nuclear weapons, but they are open to nuclear power used strictly for civilian purposes. To quote from the post of US Vice President JD Vance on X, “I've seen a lot of confusion over the issue of "civilian nuclear power" and "uranium enrichment." These are distinct issues. Iran could have civilian nuclear power without enrichment, but Iran rejected that. Meanwhile, they've enriched uranium far above the level necessary for any civilian purpose. They've been found in violation of their non-proliferation obligations by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which is hardly a rightwing organization.
It's one thing to want civilian nuclear energy. It's another thing to demand sophisticated enrichment capacity. And it's still another to cling to enrichment while simultaneously violating basic non-proliferation obligations and enriching right to the point of weapons-grade uranium.
I have yet to see a single good argument for why Iran needed to enrich uranium well above the threshold for civilian use. I've yet to see a single good argument for why Iran was justified in violating its non-proliferation obligations. I've yet to see a single good pushback against the IAEA's findings.”
The situation is deteriorating day by day in the Middle East, Iran has escalated the strikes on Israel by attacking Tel aviv, and Haifa launching roughly 400 ballistic missiles, and destroying a hospital south of Tel aviv. Israel has done precision strikes killing six scientists and 27 government officials in targeted hits. These circumstances are not helping anyone, Iran having a nuclear weapon will imbalance the region, Pakistan will be sandwiched between three nuclear powers, India, China and Iran. Pakistan has just fought a 4-day war with India and came out victorious in the military and diplomatic front. Iran had attacked Pakistan in 2024, Iranian missiles struck an area of Pakistan's Balochistan province near the Iranian border and which Islamabad said killed two children.
In conclusion, “Iran can never have nuclear weapons” because the geopolitical situation is against it. Is Iran allowed to have nuclear weapons? Yes, ofcourse, Iran is a sovereign state, it can do whatever they think is good for them, but Pakistan does not have to support them, or welcome their nuclear program. Iran is a neighbour you do not trust even with fireworks, let alone a Rifle.
