War of Egos - Iran and US

(Dr Saher Ghazali, Karachi)

On 22 june, 2025 we all woke up to a BREAKING news Trump says the United States has bombed 3 nuclear sites in Iran Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan. The hope of peace diminished, and the fear of WWIII became a closer future, but is it a real war, where countries and nations fight for dignity, honour and survival. POTUS and American officials are continuously saying that Iran can have Uranium for civilian use, not the weapon enriched Uranium.
United States Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard’s report in March 2025 claims that Iran suspectedly have 60% enriched Uranium in its Nuclear facilities, which is well above the threshold of the standards of IAEA.
To understand it more clearly, Uranium used in civilian nuclear power is typically enriched to 3–5% U-235, while weapons-grade uranium must be enriched to around 90%. As of mid-2025, Iran has enriched uranium up to 60% U-235, which is far beyond civilian levels and close to weapons-grade. It currently holds approximately 409 kilograms of 60% enriched uranium — enough, if further enriched, for several nuclear bombs.
When asked why his deal bars Iran from enriching ANY uranium at all?
President Trump masterfully defended his stance by saying:
"They are sitting on top of one of the largest piles of oil in the WORLD. I don't know why they need nuclear power for civilian work… It's one thing for certain countries to say I want a certain amount where I can go nuclear a bit because we need it for electricity, and we needed for air-conditioners, et cetera, but when you're sitting on one of the largest oil piles anywhere in the world, it is a bit hard to see why you would need that."
On the other hand, Supreme Leader of Iran Khamenei has warned America in his post on X, “The US entering in this matter [war] is 100% to its own detriment. The damage it will suffer will be far greater than any harm that Iran may encounter.” In another post on X he continues to threaten the US by saying “The harm the US will suffer will definitely be irreparable if they enter this conflict militarily.”
On 21 June, 2025, the US entered the conflict by attacking three nuclear facilities in Iran. There are reports from several news agencies of Iran threatening to close “Strait of Hormuz”, which provides 20% supply of World Oil, but so far there are no official announcements. Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz will affect European countries the most, and there will be a significant spike in oil prices, eventually leading to inflation.
Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Foreign Minister, Islamic Republic of Iran said on X that “The United States, a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, has committed a grave violation of the UN Charter, international law and the NPT by attacking Iran's peaceful nuclear installations.

The events this morning are outrageous and will have everlasting consequences. Each and every member of the UN must be alarmed over this extremely dangerous, lawless and criminal behavior.
In accordance with the UN Charter and its provisions allowing a legitimate response in self-defense, Iran reserves all options to defend its sovereignty, interest, and people.”
An Iranian official told Reuters:
"If it’s a choice between halting uranium enrichment and going to war — we choose war".
To conclude, the threats, verbal attacks, and military conflict has shown the hurt egos of two nations. The US wants Iran to sign the deal, and as it is considered as World’s Superpower, the Iranian refusal to do so has hit a nerve, while Iran’s ego is bruised because the US ordered them to sign the deal instead of negotiating a deal with them. The time is on no one’s side, the longer this conflict will go on, the farther the effects will spread. These nations and their leaders need to think, do they really want to throw the whole world in an era of destruction, poverty, and hunger? Does their egos really matter that much? And does their own people matter nothing?
