Impact of Hostel Environment on Students’ Moral Development at University Level Muhammad Iftikhar and Insha Malik Emai: [email protected] The mood in the hostel greatly influences the moral development of university students. The university is a significant phase in which the values, behavior and social responsibilities are also imbibed along with academic knowledge. As a large portion of the students live in the hostel away from their homes, the atmosphere of the hostel plays a significant role in the formation of their personality and character. The positive school climate instills in students the values of self-discipline, honesty, co-operation and respect for others. Students living with fellow students from other cities and backgrounds helps them understand and be tolerant about diversity. They master the skills of adjusting, peaceful problem-solving and mutual assistance in daily life. They gain confidence through such experiences and are ready to be responsible citizens in the society. A healthy hostel atmosphere is important and should not be neglected as students tend to follow the habits and attitudes of their friends. Good company encourages positive behaviours with students including regular study, cleanliness, team working and good behaviour. Hostel life also helps to learn independence and responsibility as the students are responsible to conduct their daily life, studies and other activities without their family support. These attributes are important in their moral and personal growth. Community engagement is also an important part of the life in the hostel. Often students stay in hostels together and engage in social and community activities like helping the needy, conducting education programs, cleanliness drives and sports activities. These activities help to build co-operation and caring among pupils. Students learn about the leadership and the importance of serving society through community involvement. They gain awareness of social issues and acquire the sense of responsibility to the society and the nation. But a negative environment in the hostel can also impact students negatively. Students might become involved in immoral habits and careless behavior due to bad company, lack of discipline and unhealthy activities. Hence it is the duty of the hostel management and the university authorities to give proper guidance, supervision and to give healthy opportunities to the students so that they could grow morally and academically. To wrap up, the moral development of the University students is very much affected by the hostel environment. The positive and disciplined management helps to make students honest, responsible and socially active. Education is not only imparted at the hostel but also valuable life lessons are learnt through the community service and interaction with fellow students. Hence, a healthy hostel culture is what the universities must ensure in order to help them develop their moral values and bright futures. |
