Hotel Made Entirely of Salt – Bolivia

Salar de Uyuni is the largest
salt flat in the world, measuring 4,086 square miles, with nearly 10 billion
tons of salt – nearly 25 times larger than the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.
Located in Bolivia, mounds of mined salt pepper the landscape. Palacio de Sal, a
hotel born out of the Salar de Uyuni, is exactly what the name implies: a palace
of salt. Due to the lack of construction materials in the Salar de Uyuni, the
Palacio de Sal was constructed with nearly one million blocks of salt.
Everything in the hotel – tables, chairs, beds, walls – is all constructed out
of salt. Of course, you have to take their word for it, as the hotel asks you to
refrain from licking the blocks. Just in case you think you’ll be tempted, have
your blood pressure checked upon return.
Rooms at the salt hotel start at $100/night. Amenities include a dry sauna, a
steam room, a pool (saltwater, of course), whirlpool baths, the world’s only
salt golf course, and the opportunity to experience some of the world’s most
incredible sunsets.
