Vitamin ‘C’ (Ascorbic acid) is
an essential vitamin to keep us healthy and fresh. Nowadays, life is becoming
more stressful as compared to few decades ago, we have a lot of facilities today
but we have many health problems as well. The main reasons behind these health
problems are environmental changes and unhealthy life style. We can do exercise
but still we need some food supplements and vitamin C is the best one.
Vitamin C is an antioxidant, which prevents oxidation process (in and outside of
our body i.e., skin) caused due to free radicals. Free radicals are found in our
external environment (in the form of pollution, Ultra violet light etc.) as well
as in our body. When we have any food it converts into energy and form some free
radicals, which cause damage to our overall health.
It is a water soluble vitamin, present in various fresh vegetables e.g.,
cabbage, cauliflower and other green vegetables and in fruits, especially in
citrus fruits such as lemon, orange, tomatoes etc. It boosts our immune system,
helps to make collagen, a protein necessary to heal wounds. It is extremely
beneficial in cardiovascular diseases and in blood pressure. In heart diseases,
the walls of blood vessels thicken because of accumulation of plaque (fats or
low density lipoprotein or bad cholesterol), blood vessels become stiff and
prevent appropriate flow of blood and consequently, cause heart diseases.
Vitamin C has great power to reduce these ominous vascular changes.
The most significant benefit about this vitamin is its anti-aging and
anti-carcinogenic (against cancer) properties. As we age, our body looses
flexibility, and this vitamin has miraculous effect on increasing flexibility
and freshness of our skin. It helps in common cold, inflammation of gums and in
swelling etc. Deficiency of vitamin C causes a disease called ‘scurvy’ and many
other diseases.
If we want to keep doctor away, so, that’s an excellent and cheapest source of
being healthy.
