Eroding heritage
(Syed Hussain Mosavi, karachi)
Pakistan is fortunate in having
a rich patrimony of historical sites, but unfortunately, preserving this
heritage has always been accorded a very low priority. These monuments and
buildings are treasures of the glory and grace of civilisations of the past, and
they badly need attention for their preservation and protection before they
disappear forever. These tangible cultural assets are of great historic,
architectural and artistic value. The cultural heritage that exists today in
physical form and in historical records is the common heritage of us all, giving
us an awareness of our common history and common future, as well as being an
essential part of our cultural identity. Being the new custodian of this common
heritage, the Punjab government is responsible for its preservation and
continuation for the benefit of our present as well as future generations.
