"Curious case of South african cricket"
(Syed Muhammad faizan jamil, karachi)
One of the most acrimonious
aspect of cricket is that it bores more problems rather than providing
solutions. Saeed ajmal will bowl his tremendous variations of off spin bowling
but people will remember him for that one over that cost pakistan the match in
the world t20 semi final against australia. Same is the case with misbah ul haq
whose mysterious batting style has made "drone attacks" look as the less
influential topic. People will untirely ponder their views on world cricket but
the curious case of South african cricket is perhaps the most thinkable aspect
that is bound to leave individuals into amazement.
South africa is the country bestowed with massive amount of talent as far as
cricketing aspect is concerned and one would question their famous tag as
"chokers" after studying through their present set of players. When we talk
about South african team we are talking about five players who can occupy the
slot of opening batsman in the team. The likes of graeme smith, hashim amla,
henry davids, collin ingram and the multi talented quinton de kock fills the
glittering list of openers. Middle order batting undoubtedly demands the most
intellingent cricket selection mind as the team posseses four genuine all
rounders who can make the team win matches at any point of time. Jacques kallis
is a player which any team would love to have but in the case of south africa
they just dont know how to use him in the most appropriate manner considering
the amount of talent present in the ranks.. Ryan mclaren has showcased his
tremendous attributes with the ball as he is the second highest wicket.
taker in 2013 but it is his late order batting that makes him stand out as the
second most polished all rounder after kallis. It would be silly to write off
the overall effectiveness of jean paul duminy as he is a bread and butter type
of an individual for any side but sending him lower down the order, without
giving him enough time to settle indeed making him compete without a fight. Man
of the match performances by wayne parnell has happily added to the selection
headache as his energy in the field is hard to be neglected. The trio of AB de
villiers, francois du plessis and david miller is bound to leave the thinkers
into admiration as the beauty of their styles and their competitiveness makes
them stand out in the overall saturated list.
As far as the bowling department is concerned, one would be amazed with the
variety that the attack contains.Steyn stands out as the most lethal fast bowler
in world cricket but philander competes him as far as the line and length is
concerned. Morne morkel throws the fierce bouncers in the batsman,s face only to
see lunwabo tsotsobe competing him in the control and accuracy. Ryan mclaren is
perhaps the most reliable bowler in the death overs but parnell competes him by
providing important breakthroughs. Imran tahir delievers the variety of leg spin
but robin peterson adds his vitae by providing his batting talents in the
company of his off spin bowling.
Overall, its a state of amazement and dilemma that a nation sprouted with this
much amount of all round cricketing talent has been unable to remove the tag of
"chokers" from their performances. They possess performance oriented leadership
candidates in all the three formats but their second one day international
defeat against Pakistan has sprouted the questions regarding their conventional
choking attitudes which still remains a mystery. As a cricket loving fan, i
personally hope and pray that the cricketing brains of south Africa sprout a
never ending determination in their cricketing ranks for which they will be
respected in colour clothing as they are respected in whites.
