Rohingya’s identity and our dilemma

(Ozair Mehmood, lahore)

They wanted to migrate to have a placid life in some other region of the world. According to Amnesty International these ‘Rohingyas’, are declared as the most persecuted and oppressed refugees in the world. But all Asian states in general and Muslim states in particular deserve kudos for their cold and inhumane response to rescue these boat people who are 25,000 individuals.

Much to my surprise, initially Malaysia refused to provide them any kind of help and shelter. The stance of Thailand was much appreciated as they said they are ready to help Rohingya people on humanitarian base.
Interestingly during Pakistan movement in 1940s, Muslim of Burma (Rohingya) wanted to be a part of East Pakistan on reason of religious empathy and geographical adjacency. Muhammad Ali Jinnah weaned their bid as he was not capable enough to interfere in matters of Burma. After that they started a jihad movement. Even now Karachi is home to 200K Rohingya Muslims according to some reports.

I want to talk about apathetic attitude of UN and other western states including US towards Rohingya Muslims. But before that I will discuss the self styled “Caliphate” of Al Baghdadi ISIS. ISIS is busy in killing Muslims of Iraq and Syria labeling them as Infidels. They are busy in celebrating their one year hold on Mosul, city of Iraq. They are busy in genocide of Yazidi tribes and selling their women. When extremist Buddhist monks were killing Burmese Muslims, noble fighters of ISIS were destroying shrines and mosques.

At the same time, TTP was fighting with “infidels” of Pakistan Army for ‘rule of Sharia law in Pakistan’. ‘Mujahedeen’ of SSP and LeJ were too busy in sectarian killings and earning ‘virgins of heavens’. These all outfits who are working for Islamisation of whole of the world but they couldn’t extend a helping hand to Muslims of Burma who were slaughtered mercilessly and ruthlessly. And ultimately they have to leave their in a very broken hearted way.

I was expecting some kind of disclosure from Boko Haram as well. But they are too busy in kidnapping young and teen Muslim girls from Kano and around that they have no time for Burmese Muslims like their bosses of ISIS. After all they are a part of ISIS now.

Coming over to the unique and solitary Civil Society of Pakistan, I were waiting for them to come out on streets and stage a protest over inhumane killings of Rohingyas but they didn’t do it. I was unable to see any night vigil. Now we can see a clear demarcation and divide in our already deteriorated society. Here is a question that, are we a society? We might be a bunch of torn and tiny societies but we are not a single entity, neither a nation nor society. We have our own interests. You will see religio-political parties protesting on Rohingya issue and at same time civil society and secular minded NGOs protesting over unkind murder of Sabin Mahmood.Even, none of religious party came out on fierce killings of Ismali Muslims.

Media houses have their own interests. They can provide you 24 hour coverage of demeaning and dubious cases like Ayyan Ali (that includes capturing her tattoo as well). But they couldn’t spare few minutes for Rohingyas in their news bulletins.

And here I don’t wanna talk about Noble Prize winner for peace Aung San Suu Kyi and her silence over genocide of Burmese Muslims. I will not even talk about role of UN as it was much expected from her past record. We know Charity begins at home so we need to mend our own affairs at first. We need to be a nation, be a family. A folk, where we can feel for others, regardless of their creed, sect, language and culture and where we respect each other’s belief.
As Confucius said
“The strength of a nation drives from integrity of the home”
