Pollution
(Muhammad Shoaib, Karachi)
Through the columns of your
esteemed website I would like to bring to the notice of all the environmental
groups, the total disregard shown by the industries situated near the river
towards environmental pollution.
A whole range of industries from tanneries, chemicals, electronics and heavy
machinery are discharge their effluents into the river water. They are ignoring
the guidelines set by the local pollution control regarding the discharge of the
liquid and solid waste into the river.
As a concerned citizen, I visited the local effluent treatment plant. I was
shocked to discover that it was shut down due to the lack of working capital. At
present discharge of liquid and solid waste into the river is killing all the
fishes and other life forms. It is also turning the river into a large sewer.
Perhaps these industries do not realize that a clean river will bring them
goodwill and health. If some urgent steps are not taken, there is a fear of a
disease epidemic breaking out.for one and all.
