Drug addiction is one of the
most serious problem which world is facing at present. Drug addiction is defined
as the compulsive and out-of-control drug use.
People who are addicted to drug feel over-whelming, uncontrollable need for
drugs or alcohols. Their self-destructive behavior cannot be understand. Most
people start taking drugs as the way to have fun but after some time they become
addicted to it.
There are two main types of drug dependence. Psychological dependence and
physical dependence. Psychological is that feeling in which drug abuser needs a
drug to maintain a feeling of well being while physical dependence is
characterised by the tolerance.
Due to drugs the addict lose their educational and professional capabilities.
They get involved in serious criminal activities. The sole aim in life of an
addict becomes the procurement. Other aims and objectives of life are thrown by
the roadside. Besides, dread diseases such as hepatitis, HIV/AIDS can easily
attract the drug addicts? through the use of injectible drugs.
There are certain drugs whose addicts cannot recover; opium, charas and heroin
are among of them. Unfortunately, addiction is very common in all over the
world. Men, women and children beg money from people and go to the drug sellers
and buy their dose of heroin. But Mafia is so strong that no one can stop the
purchase and selling of drugs. They have a long chain of connections?.
In the last few decades drug addiction has also increased in Pakistan. According
to United Nation Offices on Drugs and Crimes. Pakistan has 6.7 million drug
users including 78% male and 22% female. More than 4 million of these are
addicts. 700 people daily die due to drug related issues.
The use of drug has also spread among the youth of Pakistan. Drugs such as
charas and marijuana are very popular among younger generation. This may be
related to the fact that youth tends to seek adventure, excitement, new thrills
and does not always realize the danger inherent in trying out drug.
Some people use drug for relieving tension, pain and to forget about the
frustration, disappointments and bitter realities of this world.
Some of the illegal drugs come from neighbor country Afghanistan. The country
that is responsible for at least 75% of the world's heroin. UNODC calculates
that more than 800,000 Pakistanis aged between 15 to 64 use heroin regularly.
There are also Drug Addict Rehabiliation NGOs in Pakistan that are working on
preventing use of illegal drugs in Pakistan. Drug Free Pakistan Foundation, New
Horizon Care Centre, Dost Foundation, Waris Foundation, Ray of Hope( Drug
treatment and Rehabiliation Centre), Teen Challenge Pakistan and Friends Of
Anti-Nacrotic Of Sindh (FANOS) are creating awareness among masses specially the
youth.
Government has also not paid such attention to this issue and seems to be much
ignorant about it. Though Pakistan has strict laws regarding to the production
of drugs but such measures have proved almost zero effect instead such drug
issues are dissolving Pakistan social cohesion.
