حَدَّثَنِي إِسْحَاقُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ شُعَيْبِ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ كَعْبِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ ، وَكَانَ كَعْبُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ أَحَدَ الثَّلَاثَةِ الَّذِينَ تِيبَ عَلَيْهِمْ ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَبَّاسٍ أَخْبَرَهُ : أَنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، خَرَجَ مِنْ عِنْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي وَجَعِهِ الَّذِي تُوُفِّيَ فِيهِ ، فَقَالَ النَّاسُ : يَا أَبَا حَسَنٍ ، كَيْفَ أَصْبَحَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ فَقَالَ : أَصْبَحَ بِحَمْدِ اللَّهِ بَارِئًا ، فَأَخَذَ بِيَدِهِ عَبَّاسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ : أَنْتَ وَاللَّهِ بَعْدَ ثَلَاثٍ عَبْدُ الْعَصَا ، وَإِنِّي وَاللَّهِ لَأَرَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَوْفَ يُتَوَفَّى مِنْ وَجَعِهِ هَذَا ، إِنِّي لَأَعْرِفُ وُجُوهَ بَنِي عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ عِنْدَ الْمَوْتِ ، اذْهَبْ بِنَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَلْنَسْأَلْهُ فِيمَنْ هَذَا الْأَمْرُ ؟ إِنْ كَانَ فِينَا عَلِمْنَا ذَلِكَ ، وَإِنْ كَانَ فِي غَيْرِنَا عَلِمْنَاهُ ، فَأَوْصَى بِنَا ، فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ : إِنَّا وَاللَّهِ لَئِنْ سَأَلْنَاهَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَمَنَعَنَاهَا لَا يُعْطِينَاهَا النَّاسُ بَعْدَهُ ، وَإِنِّي وَاللَّهِ لَا أَسْأَلُهَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ .

Urdu Translation

مجھ سے اسحاق بن راہویہ نے بیان کیا، کہا ہم کو بشر بن شعیب بن ابی حمزہ نے خبر دی، کہا کہ مجھ سے میرے والد نے بیان کیا، ان سے زہری نے بیان کیا، انہیں عبداللہ بن کعب بن مالک انصاری نے خبر دی   اور کعب بن مالک رضی اللہ عنہ ان تین صحابہ میں سے ایک تھے جن کی ( غزوہ تبوک میں شرکت نہ کرنے کی ) توبہ قبول ہوئی تھی۔ انہیں عبداللہ بن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے خبر دی کہ علی بن ابی طالب رضی اللہ عنہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس سے باہر آئے۔ یہ اس مرض کا واقعہ ہے جس میں آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے وفات پائی تھی۔ صحابہ رضی اللہ عنہم نے آپ سے پوچھا: ابوالحسن! نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کا آج مزاج کیا ہے؟ صبح انہوں نے بتایا کہ الحمدللہ اب آپ کو افاقہ ہے۔ پھر عباس بن عبدالمطلب رضی اللہ عنہ نے علی رضی اللہ عنہ کا ہاتھ پکڑ کے کہا کہ تم، اللہ کی قسم تین دن کے بعد زندگی گزارنے پر تم مجبور ہو جاؤ گے۔ اللہ کی قسم، مجھے تو ایسے آثار نظر آ رہے ہیں کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم اس مرض سے صحت نہیں پا سکیں گے۔ موت کے وقت بنو عبدالمطلب کے چہروں کی مجھے خوب شناخت ہے۔ اب ہمیں آپ کے پاس چلنا چاہئیے اور آپ سے پوچھنا چاہئیے کہ ہمارے بعد خلافت کسے ملے گی۔ اگر ہم اس کے مستحق ہیں تو ہمیں معلوم ہو جائے گا اور اگر کوئی دوسرا مستحق ہو گا تو وہ بھی معلوم ہو جائے گا اور آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ہمارے متعلق اپنے خلیفہ کو ممکن ہے کچھ وصیتیں کر دیں لیکن علی رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ اللہ کی قسم! اگر ہم نے اس وقت آپ سے اس کے متعلق کچھ پوچھا اور آپ نے انکار کر دیا تو پھر لوگ ہمیں ہمیشہ کے لیے اس سے محروم کر دیں گے۔ میں تو ہرگز آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے اس کے متعلق کچھ نہیں پوچھوں گا۔

English Translation

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Abbas: `Ali bin Abu Talib came out of the house of Allah's Apostle during his fatal illness. The people asked, O Abu Hasan (i.e. `Ali)! How is the health of Allah's Apostle this morning? `Ali replied, He has recovered with the Grace of Allah. `Abbas bin `Abdul Muttalib held him by the hand and said to him, In three days you, by Allah, will be ruled (by somebody else ), And by Allah, I feel that Allah's Apostle will die from this ailment of his, for I know how the faces of the offspring of `Abdul Muttalib look at the time of their death. So let us go to Allah's Apostle and ask him who will take over the Caliphate. If it is given to us we will know as to it, and if it is given to somebody else, we will inform him so that he may tell the new ruler to take care of us. `Ali said, By Allah, if we asked Allah's Apostle for it (i.e. the Caliphate) and he denied it us, the people will never give it to us after that. And by Allah, I will not ask Allah's Apostle for it.
