Baab Talaq Ke Masail Ka Bayan

قَالَتْ زَيْنَبُ وَسَمِعْتُ أُمَّ سَلَمَةَ تَقُولُ جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ ابْنَتِي تُوُفِّيَ عَنْهَا زَوْجُهَا وَقَدِ اشْتَكَتْ عَيْنَهَا أَفَتَكْحُلُهَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «لاَ». مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلاَثًا كُلَّ ذَلِكَ يَقُولُ لاَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «إِنَّمَا هِيَ أَرْبَعَةُ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرٌ، وَقَدْ كَانَتْ إِحْدَاكُنَّ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ تَرْمِي بِالْبَعَرَةِ عَلَى رَأْسِ الْحَوْلِ».

Urdu Translation

زینب بنت ام سلمہ رضی اللہ عنہا نے کہا کہ میں نے ام سلمہ رضی اللہ عنہا کو بھی یہ کہتے سنا کہ   ایک خاتون رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس آئیں اور عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! میری لڑکی کے شوہر کا انتقال ہو گیا ہے اور اس کی آنکھوں میں تکلیف ہے تو کیا وہ سرمہ لگا سکتی ہے؟ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے اس پر فرمایا کہ نہیں، دو تین مرتبہ ( آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے یہ فرمایا ) ہر مرتبہ یہ فرماتے تھے کہ نہیں! پھر نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا کہ یہ ( شرعی عدت ) چار مہینے اور دس دن ہی کی ہے۔ جاہلیت میں تو تمہیں سال بھر تک مینگنی پھینکنی پڑتی تھی ( جب کہیں عدت سے باہر ہوتی تھی ) ۔

English Translation

Zainab further said: I heard my mother, Um Salama saying that a woman came to Allah's Apostle and said, O Allah's Apostle! The husband of my daughter has died and she is suffering from an eye disease, can she apply kohl to her eye? Allah's Apostle replied, No, twice or thrice. (Every time she repeated her question) he said, No. Then Allah's Apostle added, It is just a matter of four months and ten days. In the Pre-Islamic Period of ignorance a widow among you should throw a globe of dung when one year has elapsed.
