حَدَّثَنَا مُسْلِمُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا أَبَانُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَنَسٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ مَثَلُ الْمُؤْمِنِ الَّذِي يَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ مَثَلُ الْأُتْرُجَّةِ رِيحُهَا طَيِّبٌ وَطَعْمُهَا طَيِّبٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَمَثَلُ الْمُؤْمِنِ الَّذِي لَا يَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ كَمَثَلِ التَّمْرَةِ طَعْمُهَا طَيِّبٌ وَلَا رِيحَ لَهَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَمَثَلُ الْفَاجِرِ الَّذِي يَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ كَمَثَلِ الرَّيْحَانَةِ رِيحُهَا طَيِّبٌ وَطَعْمُهَا مُرٌّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَمَثَلُ الْفَاجِرِ الَّذِي لَا يَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ كَمَثَلِ الْحَنْظَلَةِ طَعْمُهَا مَرٌّ وَلَا رِيحَ لَهَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَمَثَلُ الْجَلِيسِ الصَّالِحِ كَمَثَلِ صَاحِبِ الْمِسْكِ إِنْ لَمْ يُصِبْكَ مِنْهُ شَيْءٌ أَصَابَكَ مِنْ رِيحِهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَمَثَلُ جَلِيسِ السُّوءِ كَمَثَلِ صَاحِبِ الْكِيرِ إِنْ لَمْ يُصِبْكَ مِنْ سَوَادِهِ أَصَابَكَ مِنْ دُخَانِهِ .

Urdu Translation

انس رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ایسے مومن کی مثال جو قرآن پڑھتا ہے اس نارنگی کی سی ہے جس کی بو بھی اچھی ہے اور جس کا ذائقہ بھی اچھا ہے اور ایسے مومن کی مثال جو قرآن نہیں پڑھتا اس کھجور کی طرح ہے جس کا ذائقہ اچھا ہوتا ہے لیکن اس میں بو نہیں ہوتی، اور فاجر کی مثال جو قرآن پڑھتا ہے، گلدستے کی طرح ہے جس کی بو عمدہ ہوتی ہے اور اس کا مزا کڑوا ہوتا ہے، اور فاجر کی مثال جو قرآن نہیں پڑھتا، ایلوے کے مانند ہے، جس کا ذائقہ کڑوا ہوتا ہے، اور اس میں کوئی بو بھی نہیں ہوتی، اور صالح دوست کی مثال مشک والے کی طرح ہے، کہ اگر تمہیں اس سے کچھ بھی نہ ملے تو اس کی خوشبو تو ضرور پہنچ کر رہے گی، اور برے دوست کی مثال اس دھونکنی ( لوہے کی بٹھی ) والے کی سی ہے، کہ وہ اگر اس کی سیاہی سے بچ بھی جائے تو اس کا دھواں تو لگ ہی کر رہے گا۔

English Translation

Narrated Anas ibn Malik: The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: A believer who recites the Quran is like a citron whose fragrance is sweet and whose taste is sweet, a believer who does not recite the Quran is like a date which has no fragrance but has sweet taste, a profligate who recites the Quran is like basil whose fragrance is sweet but whose taste is bitter, and the profligate who does not recite the Quran is like the colocynth which has a bitter taste and has not fragrance. A good companion is like a man who has musk; if nothing of it goes to you, its fragrance will (certainly) go to you; and a bad companion is like a man who has bellows; if its (black) root does not go to you, its smoke will (certainly) go to you.
