Ingredients
  1. 8 oz. dhal
  2. 1 pint (U.S. 2 ½ cups) water
  3. 3 stalks celery
  4. ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
  5. ½ -inch slice of creamed coconut
  6. ½ teaspoon chilli powder
  7. 1 teaspoon ground cummin seeds salt to taste
  8. oil for frying
  9. pinch of asafoetida (optional)
  10. 1 rounded teaspoon mustard seeds
Method
  • Wash the dhal thoroughly. Cover with 1 pint of water and cook until tender adding more water if necessary. Wash, trim and cut the celery into 4-inch pieces. Simmer in a little water with the turmeric until tender. Add the celery, coconut, chilli powder, cummin seeds and salt to the dhal. Heat some oil in a frying pan and fry the asafoetida, if used, with the mustard seeds, until they crackle. Combine with the dhal and serve with plain boiled rice.
