Diet Or Supplements?
(Shoaib Allauddin, Karachi)
A lot of people get confused as
to whether it's better to take a digestive health supplement, or to follow a
specially regulated diet in order to get the nutrition they need. There are firm
believers for each method, but the truth is, you really don't have to choose. In
fact, it's better to use a combination of both methods to make sure that your
body gets all the health-giving nutrition it needs.
The sad truth is, it is almost impossible to get all the vitamins and minerals
you need every day with a regular diet. Changes in farming practices have
greatly reduced the amount of vitamins and minerals found in fruits and
vegetables, and even healthy versions of foods are often packed with harmful
chemicals and preservatives. So even if you follow the healthiest diet in the
world, you still are at risk for not getting all the nutrition you need. And to
be honest, how many people actually have the discipline to follow through with
the rigorous diet that would be needed to get even most of these nutrients on a
daily basis? It's simply not feasible in today's world.
However, the flip side of that is that people can't think that they can rely on
a multivitamin or digestive health supplement to give them all the nutrition
they need, and then eat an unhealthy diet. Digestive health supplements can only
work as much as you let them, and if you continue to eat an unhealthy or even
simply nutritionally deficient diet while taking a digestive health supplement,
chances are that you're not going to get the results you are hoping for.
So the answer is to use each method to support the other. Eating a healthy diet
is a good idea for so many reasons; and eating a diet that is suited to your
digestive health supplements can greatly maximize the potential benefits to your
health that the supplement can provide. On the other hand, if there are certain
nutrients that are simply impossible to provide for your body in your normal
diet, then you may want to use a digestive health supplement to make sure that
you don't end up with a vitamin or mineral deficiency.
