KKH, The abyss of death

(M Akram basho, Skardu)

Karakoram Highway (KKH) has never been secure in history, nor will it be safe for the next hundred years. Throughout its history, journeying on this road felt like walking on thin ice, marked by never-ending incidents of terrorism, sectarian killings, and looting. Numerous incidents and tragedies in the past decade, including the recent incident in Hoder Nala, Chilas, where unknown miscreants opened fire on a passenger bus, resulting in the death of at least eight passengers and injuries about twenty six others, have once again raised security concerns.

It was not the first time that innocent passengers were brutally slaughtered on the KKH but, it has remained the abyss of death for both the locals and the tourists. To delve into the past, let's highlight three major tragic incidents from 2012. In February, gunmen forcefully hauled twenty Shia Muslim passengers off buses traveling from Rawalpindi to Gilgit in the northern district of Kohistan, ruthlessly shooting them dead. Similarly, in April of the same year, six buses were burnt down in Chilas, resulting in the tragic death of at least nine passengers. Likewise, another heart-wrenching incident unfolded in August at Babusar Top in the district of Mansehra, where approximately twenty travelers were killed at point-blank range.

The killing of innocent passengers has unfortunately become orthodox on this road. However, the fragile condition of the route poses a grave danger for both locals and tourists alike. According to a local news report's survey, in the past June and July alone, thirty-five travelers lost their lives in accidents, and sixty eight passengers were severely injured. Landslides and mudslides have become common on this road, often causing extended closures for several hours. Additionally, when sectarian strifes erupt in a city in Gilgit-Baltistan, innocent commuters and tourists also have to bear the brunt on this highway.

The indigenous people, responding to the challenges, often block the road in their respective areas, staging protests for several days. This leads to a prolonged disruption of this route, causing significant inconvenience for both local and foreign travelers. Not only does this waste the time of the travelers and tourists, but it also leaves a substantial blemish on Pakistan's tourism sector. It's noteworthy that a considerable number of international tourists also travel on this road.

The Karakoram Highway (KKH) plays a pivotal role in promoting tourism and trade between Pakistan and China. Serving as a gateway to socio-economic ties, its significance cannot be ignored. The safety and security of this vital route are imperative, as it not only facilitates economic exchanges but also fosters cultural connections between the two nations, contributing to mutual growth and development. It's allure extends globally, attracting tourists to explore the breathtaking landscapes, including the captivating Deosai National Park and the second-highest mighty mountain, K2. This not only boosts tourism but also elevates the region's profile on the world stage.

It is high time to take decisive action in ensuring the safety of travelers on the highway. Deploying forces like the Special Protection Unit (SPU), GB Scouts, Rangers, and FC is a necessary step to enhance security. This strategic move will not only safeguard those using the highway but also contribute to creating a safer and more secure environment for all.

Another option is to provide an alternative, shorter, easy, and secure route, connecting it to major cities in Pakistan, particularly Rawalpindi. The revival of the ancient and historical Astor Shounter Pass road has long been a demand of the local population. It is claimed that if Astor Shounter Pass is reopened, the journey from Astor to Azad Kashmir and then to Rawalpindi will take only 8 hours, significantly reducing travel time. The journey from Skardu to Rawalpindi will also be considerably shortened by 12 to 13 hours. The revival of this route will not only make travel safer but will also double the benefits in terms of tourism, trade, and related advantages for the region. The locals demand the immediate revival of Astor Shounter Pass, saving lives and securing the future of Gilgit-Baltistan.
