The Neglect of Science in Pakistan

The Neglect of Science in Pakistan
Science is often neglected in Pakistan, and this neglect is perpetuated indirectly. Many people, including students, mistakenly believe that the primary purpose of studying science is to become a doctor, engineer, teacher, or to secure a government job. This narrow perspective is misguided.
The true value of science lies in understanding its fundamental principles, concepts, and applications. Science encompasses a broad range of fields beyond medical science and engineering. However, students are often restricted by societal expectations to pursue only these two fields.
Those who attempt to become doctors or engineers but face setbacks due to lack of interest or aptitude often become demotivated. Even after pursuing alternative fields, they may still doubt their competence. This mindset is detrimental to their growth and potential.
Why Becoming Only a Doctor or Engineer is Problematic
Pursuing a career as a doctor or engineer is not inherently bad. However, the sole focus on these professions can lead to unemployment. In Pakistan, many MBBS doctors remain jobless, not due to a lack of employment opportunities, but because they lack the necessary skills or cannot apply their knowledge effectively.
To revitalize science in Pakistan, it is essential to study science for its inherent value, rather than solely for career prospects. By doing so, we can foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of science, leading to a more innovative and progressive society.
