‎“Pakistani Men & Smoking: Logic or Self-Deception?”

(Muhammad Siddiqui, Hyderabad)

‎Pakistani Men & Smoking: Logic or Self-Deception:

‎In Pakistan, many men don’t treat smoking as just a habit — they call it a “need.”
‎After meals, during stress, at tea stalls, or just to kill time — a puff of a cigarette somehow feels like the answer to everything.

‎But are the reasons men give for smoking really true?
‎Let’s break down the most common desi excuses — and the reality behind them.

‎1. “Cigarette helps with digestion after meals”

‎What they say:
‎“If I don’t smoke after eating, it feels like the food hasn’t digested.”

‎The truth:
‎It’s just a habit. Cigarettes don’t aid digestion.
‎In fact, they can worsen acidity, cause gas, and hurt your stomach lining.

‎2. “Cigarettes reduce stress and tension”

‎What they say:
‎“When I’m stressed, only a smoke calms me down.”

‎The truth:
‎The “calm” you feel is short-term and fake.
‎Nicotine spikes your nerves, then crashes them — leaving you more anxious. The more you smoke, the more trapped you feel.

‎3. “Smoking looks cool and stylish”

‎What they say:
‎“I look like a hero with a cigarette.”

‎The truth:
‎Maybe from a distance.
‎But up close? Yellow teeth, bad breath, dark lips, wrinkles, coughing — nothing stylish about it.

‎ 4. “I only smoke one or two a day — that’s not harmful”

‎What they say:
‎“I’m not a chain smoker, just casual.”

‎The truth:
‎Even one cigarette a day damages your heart, lungs, and blood vessels.
‎There’s no “safe amount.” Today it’s one, tomorrow it’s five.

‎5. “Smoking is a symbol of masculinity”

‎What they say:
‎“Real men smoke. Kids don’t.”

‎The truth:
‎Real men control their habits.
‎Smoking doesn’t show strength — it shows weakness and lack of awareness.

‎ 6. “Smoking helps me lose weight”

‎What they say:
‎“It reduces hunger. Keeps me slim.”

‎The truth:
‎Skipping meals by harming your health isn’t smart.
‎Cigarettes may curb appetite, but they also damage your heart, lungs, skin, and stamina.

‎7. “My grandfather smoked his whole life and lived long”

‎What they say:
‎“My uncle smoked daily and lived till 90. Nothing happened to him.”

‎The truth:
‎A few people get lucky — but most don’t.
‎Thousands in Pakistan die early from smoking-related heart attacks, cancer, or lung diseases. Don’t judge by the survivors. Look at the real stats.

‎Bottom Line:

‎Smoking is just a craving we’ve fooled ourselves into calling a “need.”

‎It doesn’t help with digestion.
‎It doesn’t relax your mind.
‎It doesn’t make you more of a man.
‎And it definitely doesn’t make you look cool.

‎What it does is slowly destroy your body, mind, and life — and you won’t even realize until it’s too late.

‎If you truly have strength — face the truth
‎Quitting smoking is hard, but not impossible.

‎Just remember:

‎ “Real strength isn’t in puffing a cigarette — it’s in having the willpower to drop it.”
