In 4th ODI against Srilanka, played on 5th of February 2009, Gautham Gambhir
(India) caught behind the wickets by Kumara Sangakara on Muttiah Muralitharan’s
bowl. This wicket leads Muralitharan to take 503rd wicket of his cricket career.
Now he’s the leading wicket taker in the ODI format. Moreover, he also has the
highest wicket taker record in Test Cricket. He broke the record of Waseem
Akram’s 502 wickets.
He achieves this record by playing 328 ODI matches (28 matches, fewer than
Waseem Akram) approximately in 15 years and 6 months period. Muralitharan
possess 23% proportion of wickets taken by Srilankan Team in winning games.
Srilanka win 185 out of 317 ODIs matches in which Muralitharan contributed his
thrilling bowling spells. He took 339 wickets in Srilankan wins –another world
record of Muralitharan- with the average of 17.81 per wicket and with the
economy of 3.59 per over. His ODI career best bowling figure is 7/30 against
India at Sharjah in 2000. He took 88 wickets against Pakistan which is the
highest for him against any team. His bowling average is not too good against
Australia he took only 51 wickets against Australian team with 31.07 apiece. He
took many titles of Man of The Match, recorded in his career. Batsmen of the
cricket world always played him with some respect. Muralitharan is very
