Democracy

(Zohaib Zulfiqar Abbasi, Islamabad)

What is democracy? I think to consider Public as a real power. According to Abraham Lincoln “Government by the people, Government for the people.” The democracy is based on totally Institutions. The major Institutions of democracy are Parliament, Judiciary & media. Where parliament consists of President, National assembly, and senate. These institutions plays very important role in democratic system.

In our country, the Democracy’s considers to be favorite system. 1973’s constitutions’ considers the best constitution but continuously amendments in it since 1973 led to develop an occupied constitution. In fact, even after 63 years, we are not able to make the decision either we follow the Parliamentary system or presidential system. Which of our Institution is supreme? Some people think parliament’ as a supreme institution, as a center of power is public, whereas parliament is elected by the people of country, so it is supreme.

In spite of the fact, almost 90% of the members of national assembly are landlords & the people of high level society. If we go to senate, we see most of Bureaucrats and the people who are rejected by their people. Any amendment in constitution must need 2/3rd majority of National assembly and Senate each. Another amazing thing that the voting power of the member of national assembly’s is 1 out of 342,means 1/342, approximately 0.3 percent of all, and the voting power of Senator is 1/100, approximately 1 percent of all, that means thrice more then the member of national assembly’s .

According to Abraham Lincoln Democracy is the Government by the people, for the people. This definition is excluded from the democracy of Pakistan. However the definition of Iqbal’s is completely fit on our democratic system. According to Allama Muhammad Iqbal, “Democracy is the type of government, where people are counted but not weighed in terms of their mind.”

This democracy is also controversial according to Islam. Allah says in Quran Sura al Zumr verse 9,
“Say (Unto them, O Muhammad (S.A.W.W) Are those who know equal with those who know not”. But democracy states this equality.

Our present system is a Question mark for every sense able person. Today too, the Rules by “Pakistan Panel Code” are only applicable on the poor’s. Police and Session courts become a source of corruption. When on a occasion, a request is made to Holy Prophet (S.A.W.W) for the freedom of a woman named Fatima, Prophet (S.A.W.W) said, “The nations before you are only destroyed due to the reason, the rules vary from small to big’s. We have already lost the eastern Pakistan, Now we are not in a condition to lost any thing else. But I am still hopeful for the change. As my Teacher says, when hopeless condition exists, then a revolution comes. On this hope I want exit, Allah Hafiz.
