Parveen Shakir (November 24,
1952 - December 26, 1994) was a well-known Urdu poet, teacher and a civil
servant of the Government of Pakistan. She started her career as writing in
early age and her first poetry album, “Khushbu” was a hit in 1976. Parveen
Shakir was also awarded one of Pakistan's uppermost honours, the Pride of
Performance award for her exceptional contribution to literature. Her ghazalyaat
are judged as a mixture of classical tradition with current sensitivity and
mostly sort out the feminine side on love and romance, and associated themes
like beauty, intimacy, separation, break-ups, distances, distrust and
infidelity and disloyalty. She was highly educated. She did MA in English
literature, English language and Bank Administration as well as held a PhD
degree. She married a Pakistani doctor, Naseer Ali, with whom she had a son,
Syed Murad Ali. Her marriage did not go long and broken in a divorce. She died
on Dec 26th, 1994 due to road accident. Shakir's published books such as Khushbu,
Sad-barg, Khud-kalaami, Inkaar, aah-e-Tamaam and Kaf-e-Aa'ina.
