Dreams deserve to be owned

(Hareem Zainab, rawalpindi)

She was walking on the wet pavement of university in a chilly evening of December, but the chill outside her was nothing comparable to the numb coldness inside her. Her heart was girded with fears of losing and pain of failures. In this moment of a bleak evening with darkness within and darkness out she has felt hatred, fear, anger and confusion. She has felt anything but hope and confidence. Being women was her only fault.

“Fatima! You cannot do it. You are women and you have crossed twenty, now you should get married”, Said her mother.
She has tried to convince her parents that she wanted to be a scientist but all her parents said was “don’t live in fool’s paradise, there is no life for women without marriage, no one will marry you if you peruse your mad ambition”.
You are just a woman and for a woman nothing is more important than marriage.
She belonged to that class of society where fathers don’t appraise their daughters for academic success but they do praise them for being dedicated house wives.

Fatima has no job because her family didn’t want her to be a working lady. She applied for scholarships in foreign universities but got rejected. Life was unkind to her in every manner possible. She was a complete failure and yet her failures were never able to stop her. She was bright and charming but life made her dull, and a being whom world does not need.

Years passed and city’s main square was jam packed with cars and media personnel. Everyone was waiting for a world renowned scientist to come back from abroad. Finally Fatima arrived and the whole square welcomed her with a huge round of applause. Fatima was older then and as told by her mother she was alone with no family or kids and maybe she never would have any, but she had a satisfaction of remaining faithful to her dream. Some are blessed with dreams, out of those most people kill their dreams only few have the courage to own them, standup for them and chase them without the fear of facing the consequences. Despite of not being the daughter they wanted, Fatima’s parents were proud of her, not only because she was successful but also because she bore failures and felt pain of being useless and helpless but kept on moving forward. Life may not present achievements in tray to many but courage and motivation never fail their admirers.
