حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَجْلَانَ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ:‏‏‏‏ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ قَدْ كَانَ يَكُونُ فِي الْأُمَمِ مُحَدَّثُونَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَإِنْ يَكُ فِي أُمَّتِي أَحَدٌ فَعُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى:‏‏‏‏ هَذَا صَحِيحٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنِي بَعْضُ أَصْحَابِ سُفْيَانَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ قَالَ سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ:‏‏‏‏ مُحَدَّثُونَ يَعْنِي مُفَهَّمُونَ.

Urdu Translation

ام المؤمنین عائشہ رضی الله عنہا کہتی ہیں کہ   رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”اگلی امتوں میں کچھ ایسے لوگ ہوتے تھے، جو «مُحدّث» ہوتے تھے ۱؎ اگر میری امت میں کوئی ایسا ہوا تو وہ عمر بن خطاب ہوں گے“۔ امام ترمذی کہتے ہیں: ۱- یہ حدیث صحیح ہے، ۲- مجھ سے سفیان کے کسی شاگرد نے بیان کیا کہ سفیان بن عیینہ نے کہا: «محدثون» وہ ہیں جنہیں دین کی فہم عطا کی گئی ہو۔

English Translation

Narrated 'Aishah: that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Among the nations, there used to be Muhaddathun (those who were given understanding), and if there were one in my nation, it would be 'Umar bin Al-Khattab.
