Safinah narrated: The Prophet would perform Wudu with a Mudd, and he would perform Ghusl with a Sa.

وحَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ،‏‏‏‏ وَعَليُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ،‏‏‏‏ قَالَا:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيل ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ، عَنْ أَبِي رَيْحَانَةَ، عَنْ سَفِينَةَ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَتَوَضَّأُ بِالْمُدِّ وَيَغْتَسِلُ بِالصَّاعِ . قال:‏‏‏‏ وَفِي الْبَاب عَنْ عَائِشَةَ،‏‏‏‏ وَجَابِرٍ،‏‏‏‏ وَأَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى:‏‏‏‏ حَدِيثُ سَفِينَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَبُو رَيْحَانَةَ اسْمُهُ:‏‏‏‏ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَطَرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَهَكَذَا رَأَى بَعْضُ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ:‏‏‏‏ الْوُضُوءَ بِالْمُدِّ وَالْغُسْلَ بِالصَّاعِ،‏‏‏‏ وقَالَ الشَّافِعِيُّ،‏‏‏‏ وَأَحْمَدُ،‏‏‏‏ وَإِسْحَاق:‏‏‏‏ لَيْسَ مَعْنَى هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ عَلَى التَّوَقِّي أَنَّهُ لَا يَجُوزُ أَكْثَرُ مِنْهُ وَلَا أَقَلُّ مِنْهُ وَهُوَ قَدْرُ مَا يَكْفِي.

سفینہ رضی الله عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ   نبی اکرم صلی الله علیہ وسلم ایک مد پانی سے وضو اور ایک صاع پانی سے غسل فرماتے تھے ۱؎۔ امام ترمذی کہتے ہیں: ۱- سفینہ کی حدیث حسن صحیح ہے، ۲- اس باب میں عائشہ، جابر اور انس بن مالک رضی الله عنہم سے بھی احادیث آئی ہیں، ۳- بعض اہل علم کی رائے یہی ہے کہ ایک مد پانی سے وضو کیا جائے اور ایک صاع پانی سے غسل، شافعی، احمد اور اسحاق بن راہویہ کہتے ہیں کہ اس حدیث کا مقصود تحدید نہیں ہے کہ اس سے زیادہ یا کم جائز نہیں بلکہ مطلب یہ ہے کہ یہ مقدار ایسی ہے جو کافی ہوتی ہے ۲؎۔
