Narrated `Abdullah bin `Umar: Allah's Apostle said, The month (can be) 29 nights (i.e. days), and do not fast till you see the moon, and if the sky is overcast, then complete Sha'ban as thirty days.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكٌ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : الشَّهْرُ تِسْعٌ وَعِشْرُونَ لَيْلَةً ، فَلَا تَصُومُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْهُ ، فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَأَكْمِلُوا الْعِدَّةَ ثَلَاثِينَ .

ہم سے عبداللہ بن مسلمہ نے بیان کیا، کہا ہم سے مالک نے ان سے عبداللہ بن دینار نے اور ان سے عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما نے بیان کیا کہ   نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا مہینہ کبھی انتیس راتوں کا بھی ہوتا ہے اس لیے ( انتیس پورے ہو جانے پر ) جب تک چاند نہ دیکھ لو روزہ نہ شروع کرو اور اگر بادل ہو جائے تو تیس دن کا شمار پورا کر لو۔
