حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ حَوْشَبٍ الطَّائِفِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ ، أَخْبَرَنَا حُصَيْنٌ ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَيْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، وَكَانَ عُثْمَانِيًّا ، فَقَالَ : لِابْنِ عَطِيَّةَ وَكَانَ عَلَوِيًّا إِنِّي لَأَعْلَمُ مَا الَّذِي جَرَّأَ صَاحِبَكَ عَلَى الدِّمَاءِ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ : بَعَثَنِي النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَالزُّبَيْرَ ، فَقَالَ : ائْتُوا رَوْضَةَ كَذَا وَتَجِدُونَ بِهَا امْرَأَةً أَعْطَاهَا حَاطِبٌ كِتَابًا ، فَأَتَيْنَا الرَّوْضَةَ فَقُلْنَا الْكِتَابَ ، قَالَتْ : لَمْ يُعْطِنِي فَقُلْنَا لَتُخْرِجِنَّ أَوْ لَأُجَرِّدَنَّكِ ، فَأَخْرَجَتْ مِنْ حُجْزَتِهَا فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى حَاطِبٍ ، فَقَالَ : لَا تَعْجَلْ وَاللَّهِ مَا كَفَرْتُ وَلَا ازْدَدْتُ لِلْإِسْلَامِ إِلَّا حُبًّا وَلَمْ يَكُنْ أَحَدٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِكَ إِلَّا وَلَهُ بِمَكَّةَ مَنْ يَدْفَعُ اللَّهُ بِهِ عَنْ أَهْلِهِ وَمَالِهِ ، وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لِي أَحَدٌ فَأَحْبَبْتُ أَنْ أَتَّخِذَ عِنْدَهُمْ يَدًا فَصَدَّقَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ عُمَرُ : دَعْنِي أَضْرِبْ عُنُقَهُ فَإِنَّهُ قَدْ نَافَقَ ، فَقَالَ : مَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّ اللَّهَ اطَّلَعَ عَلَى أَهْلِ بَدْرٍ ، فَقَالَ : اعْمَلُوا مَا شِئْتُمْ فَهَذَا الَّذِي جَرَّأَهُ .

Urdu Translation

مجھ سے محمد بن عبداللہ بن حوشب الطائفی نے بیان کیا ‘ ان سے ہشیم نے بیان کیا ‘ انہیں حصین نے خبر دی ‘ انہیں سعد بن عبیدہ نے اور انہیں ابی عبدالرحمٰن نے اور وہ عثمانی تھے ‘ انہوں نے عطیہ سے کہا ‘ جو علوی تھے ‘ کہ   میں اچھی طرح جانتا ہوں کہ تمہارے صاحب ( علی رضی اللہ عنہ ) کو کس چیز سے خون بہانے پر جرات ہوئی ‘ میں نے خود ان سے سنا ‘ وہ بیان کرتے تھے کہ مجھے اور زبیر بن عوام رضی اللہ عنہ کو نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے بھیجا۔ اور ہدایت فرمائی کہ روضہ خاخ پر جب تم پہنچو ‘ تو انہیں ایک عورت ( سارہ نامی ) ملے گی۔ جسے حاطب ابن بلتعہ رضی اللہ عنہ نے ایک خط دے کر بھیجا ہے ( تم وہ خط اس سے لے کر آؤ ) چنانچہ جب ہم اس باغ تک پہنچے ہم نے اس عورت سے کہا خط لا۔ اس نے کہا کہ حاطب رضی اللہ عنہ نے مجھے کوئی خط نہیں دیا۔ ہم نے اس سے کہا کہ خط خود بخود نکال کر دیدے ورنہ ( تلاشی کے لیے ) تمہارے کپڑے اتار لیے جائیں گے۔ تب کہیں اس نے خط اپنے نیفے میں سے نکال کر دیا۔ ( جب ہم نے وہ خط رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی خدمت میں پیش کیا ‘ تو ) آپ نے حاطب رضی اللہ عنہ کو بلا بھیجا انہوں نے ( حاضر ہو کر ) عرض کیا۔ یا رسول اللہ! میرے بارے میں جلدی نہ فرمائیں! اللہ کی قسم! میں نے نہ کفر کیا ہے اور نہ میں اسلام سے ہٹا ہوں ‘ صرف اپنے خاندان کی محبت نے اس پر مجبور کیا تھا۔ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے اصحاب ( مہاجرین ) میں کوئی شخص ایسا نہیں جس کے رشتہ دار وغیرہ مکہ میں نہ ہوں۔ جن کے ذریعہ اللہ تعالیٰ ان کے خاندان والوں اور ان کی جائیداد کی حفاظت نہ کراتا ہو۔ لیکن میرا وہاں کوئی بھی آدمی نہیں ‘ اس لیے میں نے چاہا کہ ان مکہ والوں پر ایک احسان کر دوں ‘ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے بھی ان کی بات کی تصدیق فرمائی۔ عمر رضی اللہ عنہ فرمانے لگے مجھے اس کا سر اتارنے دیجئیے یہ تو منافق ہو گیا ہے۔ لیکن نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا تمہیں کیا معلوم! اللہ تعالیٰ اہل بدر کے حالات سے خوب واقف تھا اور وہ خود اہل بدر کے بارے میں فرما چکا ہے کہ ”جو چاہو کرو۔“ ابوعبدالرحمٰن نے کہا، علی رضی اللہ عنہ کو اسی ارشاد نے ( کہ تم جو چاہو کرو، خون ریزی پر ) دلیر بنا دیا ہے۔

English Translation

Narrated Sa`d bin 'Ubaida: Abu `Abdur-Rahman who was one of the supporters of `Uthman said to Abu Talha who was one of the supporters of `Ali, I perfectly know what encouraged your leader (i.e. `Ali) to shed blood. I heard him saying: Once the Prophet sent me and Az-Zubair saying, 'Proceed to such-and-such Ar-Roudah (place) where you will find a lady whom Hatib has given a letter. So when we arrived at Ar-Roudah, we requested the lady to hand over the letter to us. She said, 'Hatib has not given me any letter.' We said to her. 'Take out the letter or else we will strip off your clothes.' So she took it out of her braid. So the Prophet sent for Hatib, (who came) and said, 'Don't hurry in judging me, for, by Allah, I have not become a disbeliever, and my love to Islam is increasing. (The reason for writing this letter was) that there is none of your companions but has relatives in Mecca who look after their families and property, while I have nobody there, so I wanted to do them some favor (so that they might look after my family and property).' The Prophet believed him. `Umar said, 'Allow me to chop off his (i.e. Hatib's) neck as he has done hypocrisy.' The Prophet said, (to `Umar), 'Who knows, perhaps Allah has looked at the warriors of Badr and said (to them), 'Do whatever you like, for I have forgiven you.' `Abdur-Rahman added, So this is what encouraged him (i.e. `Ali).
