حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ ابْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، أَنَّ أَبَا طَالِبٍ لَمَّا حَضَرَتْهُ الْوَفَاةُ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَعِنْدَهُ أَبُو جَهْلٍ ، فَقَالَ : أَيْ عَمِّ قُلْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ كَلِمَةً أُحَاجُّ لَكَ بِهَا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ ، فَقَالَ أَبُو جَهْلٍ , وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي أُمَيَّةَ : يَا أَبَا طَالِبٍ تَرْغَبُ عَنْ مِلَّةِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ فَلَمْ يَزَالَا يُكَلِّمَانِهِ حَتَّى قَالَ : آخِرَ شَيْءٍ كَلَّمَهُمْ بِهِ عَلَى مِلَّةِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : لَأَسْتَغْفِرَنَّ لَكَ مَا لَمْ أُنْهَ عَنْهُ , فَنَزَلَتْ مَا كَانَ لِلنَّبِيِّ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَنْ يَسْتَغْفِرُوا لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ وَلَوْ كَانُوا أُولِي قُرْبَى مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُمْ أَنَّهُمْ أَصْحَابُ الْجَحِيمِ سورة التوبة آية 113 , وَنَزَلَتْ إِنَّكَ لا تَهْدِي مَنْ أَحْبَبْتَ سورة القصص آية 56 .

Urdu Translation

ہم سے محمود بن غیلان نے بیان کیا، کہا ہم سے عبدالرزق نے بیان کیا، انہیں معمر نے خبر دی، انہیں زہری نے، انہیں سعید بن مسیب نے اور انہیں ان کے والد مسیب بن حزن صحابی رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہ   جب ابوطالب کی وفات کا وقت قریب ہوا تو نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ان کے پاس تشریف لے گئے۔ اس وقت وہاں ابوجہل بھی بیٹھا ہوا تھا۔ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا ”چچا! کلمہ لا الہٰ الا اللہ ایک مرتبہ کہہ دو، اللہ کی بارگاہ میں ( آپ کی بخشش کے لیے ) ایک یہی دلیل میرے ہاتھ آ جائے گی۔“ اس پر ابوجہل اور عبداللہ بن ابی امیہ نے کہا: اے ابوطالب! کیا عبدالمطلب کے دین سے تم پھر جاؤ گے! یہ دونوں ان ہی پر زور دیتے رہے اور آخری کلمہ جو ان کی زبان سے نکلا، وہ یہ تھا کہ میں عبدالمطلب کے دین پر قائم ہوں۔ پھر نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا کہ میں ان کے لیے اس وقت تک مغفرت طلب کرتا رہوں گا جب تک مجھے اس سے منع نہ کر دیا جائے گا۔ چنانچہ ( سورۃ براۃ میں ) یہ آیت نازل ہوئی «ما كان للنبي والذين آمنوا أن يستغفروا للمشركين ولو كانوا أولي قربى من بعد ما تبين لهم أنهم أصحاب الجحيم‏» ”نبی کے لیے اور مسلمانوں کے لیے مناسب نہیں ہے کہ مشرکین کے لیے دعا مغفرت کریں خواہ وہ ان کے ناطے والے ہی کیوں نہ ہوں جب کہ ان کے سامنے یہ بات واضح ہو گئی کہ وہ دوزخی ہیں۔“ اور سورۃ قصص میں یہ آیت نازل ہوئی «إنك لا تهدي من أحببت‏» ”بیشک جسے آپ چاہیں ہدایت نہیں کر سکتے۔“

English Translation

Narrated Al-Musaiyab: When Abu Talib was in his death bed, the Prophet went to him while Abu Jahl was sitting beside him. The Prophet said, O my uncle! Say: None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, an expression I will defend your case with, before Allah. Abu Jahl and `Abdullah bin Umaiya said, O Abu Talib! Will you leave the religion of `Abdul Muttalib? So they kept on saying this to him so that the last statement he said to them (before he died) was: I am on the religion of `Abdul Muttalib. Then the Prophet said, I will keep on asking for Allah's Forgiveness for you unless I am forbidden to do so. Then the following Verse was revealed:-- It is not fitting for the Prophet and the believers to ask Allah's Forgiveness for the pagans, even if they were their near relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are the dwellers of the (Hell) Fire. (9.113) The other Verse was also revealed:-- (O Prophet!) Verily, you guide not whom you like, but Allah guides whom He will ....... (28.56)
