حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ ، أَخْبَرَنَا شُعَيْبٌ ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي سَالِمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا يُحَدِّثُ ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ حِينَ تَأَيَّمَتْ حَفْصَةُ بِنْتُ عُمَرَ مِنْ خُنَيْسِ بْنِ حُذَافَةَ السَّهْمِيِّ , وَكَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ , قَدْ شَهِدَ بَدْرًا تُوُفِّيَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ ، قَالَ عُمَرُ : فَلَقِيتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ فَعَرَضْتُ عَلَيْهِ حَفْصَةَ ، فَقُلْتُ : إِنْ شِئْتَ أَنْكَحْتُكَ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتَ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : سَأَنْظُرُ فِي أَمْرِي فَلَبِثْتُ لَيَالِيَ ، فَقَالَ : قَدْ بَدَا لِي أَنْ لَا أَتَزَوَّجَ يَوْمِي هَذَا ، قَالَ عُمَرُ : فَلَقِيتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ ، فَقُلْتُ : إِنْ شِئْتَ أَنْكَحْتُكَ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتَ عُمَرَ فَصَمَتَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَلَمْ يَرْجِعْ إِلَيَّ شَيْئًا , فَكُنْتُ عَلَيْهِ أَوْجَدَ مِنِّي عَلَى عُثْمَانَ فَلَبِثْتُ لَيَالِيَ ، ثُمَّ خَطَبَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ , فَأَنْكَحْتُهَا إِيَّاهُ فَلَقِيَنِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، فَقَالَ : لَعَلَّكَ وَجَدْتَ عَلَيَّ حِينَ عَرَضْتَ عَلَيَّ حَفْصَةَ فَلَمْ أَرْجِعْ إِلَيْكَ ، قُلْتُ : نَعَمْ ، قَالَ : فَإِنَّهُ لَمْ يَمْنَعْنِي أَنْ أَرْجِعَ إِلَيْكَ فِيمَا عَرَضْتَ إِلَّا أَنِّي قَدْ عَلِمْتُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَدْ ذَكَرَهَا , فَلَمْ أَكُنْ لِأُفْشِيَ سِرَّ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَلَوْ تَرَكَهَا لَقَبِلْتُهَا .

Urdu Translation

ہم سے ابوالیمان نے بیان کیا، کہا ہم کو شعیب نے خبر دی، ان سے زہری نے بیان کیا، انہیں سالم بن عبداللہ نے خبر دی، انہوں نے عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما سے سنا اور انہوں نے عمر بن خطاب رضی اللہ عنہ سے بیان کیا کہ   جب حفصہ بنت عمر رضی اللہ عنہما کے شوہر خنیس بن حذافہ سہمی رضی اللہ عنہ کی وفات ہو گئی، وہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے اصحاب میں تھے اور بدر کی لڑائی میں انہوں نے شرکت کی تھی اور مدینہ میں ان کی وفات ہو گئی تھی۔ عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے بیان کیا کہ میری ملاقات عثمان بن عفان رضی اللہ عنہ سے ہوئی تو میں نے ان سے حفصہ کا ذکر کیا اور کہا کہ اگر آپ چاہیں تو اس کا نکاح میں آپ سے کر دوں۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ میں سوچوں گا۔ اس لیے میں چند دنوں کے لیے ٹھہر گیا، پھر انہوں نے کہا کہ میری رائے یہ ہوئی ہے کہ ابھی میں نکاح نہ کروں۔ عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ پھر میری ملاقات ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ سے ہوئی اور ان سے بھی میں نے یہی کہا کہ اگر آپ چاہیں تو میں آپ کا نکاح حفصہ بنت عمر سے کر دوں۔ ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ خاموش ہو گئے اور کوئی جواب نہیں دیا۔ ان کا یہ طریقہ عمل عثمان رضی اللہ عنہ سے بھی زیادہ میرے لیے باعث تکلیف ہوا۔ کچھ دنوں میں نے اور توقف کیا تو نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے خود حفصہ رضی اللہ عنہا کا پیغام بھیجا اور میں نے ان کا نکاح آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے کر دیا۔ اس کے بعد ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ کی ملاقات مجھ سے ہوئی تو انہوں نے کہا، شاید آپ کو میرے اس طرز عمل سے تکلیف ہوئی ہو گی کہ جب آپ کی مجھ سے ملاقات ہوئی اور آپ نے حفصہ رضی اللہ عنہا کے متعلق مجھ سے بات کی تو میں نے کوئی جواب نہیں دیا۔ میں نے کہا کہ ہاں تکلیف ہوئی تھی۔ انہوں نے بتایا کہ آپ کی بات کا میں نے صرف اس لیے کوئی جواب نہیں دیا تھا کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ( مجھ سے ) حفصہ رضی اللہ عنہا کا ذکر کیا تھا ( مجھ سے مشورہ لیا تھا کہ میں اس سے نکاح کر لوں ) اور میں نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کا راز فاش نہیں کر سکتا تھا۔ اگر آپ حفصہ رضی اللہ عنہا سے نکاح کا ارادہ چھوڑ دیتے تو بیشک میں ان سے نکاح کر لیتا۔

English Translation

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Umar: `Umar bin Al-Khattab said, When (my daughter) Hafsa bint `Umar lost her husband Khunais bin Hudhaifa As-Sahrni who was one of the companions of Allah's Apostle and had fought in the battle of Badr and had died in Medina, I met `Uthman bin `Affan and suggested that he should marry Hafsa saying, If you wish, I will marry Hafsa bint `Umar to you,' on that, he said, 'I will think it over.' I waited for a few days and then he said to me. 'I am of the opinion that I shall not marry at present.' Then I met Abu Bakr and said, 'if you wish, I will marry you, Hafsa bint `Umar.' He kept quiet and did not give me any reply and I became more angry with him than I was with `Uthman . Some days later, Allah's Apostle demanded her hand in marriage and I married her to him. Later on Abu Bakr met me and said, Perhaps you were angry with me when you offered me Hafsa for marriage and I gave no reply to you?' I said, 'Yes.' Abu Bakr said, 'Nothing prevented me from accepting your offer except that I learnt that Allah's Apostle had referred to the issue of Hafsa and I did not want to disclose the secret of Allah's Apostle , but had he (i.e. the Prophet) given her up I would surely have accepted her.
