Sunan Abu Dawood 2106 - Marriage (Kitab Al-Nikah)

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي الْعَجْفَاءِ السُّلَمِيِّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ خَطَبَنَا عُمَرُرَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَلَا لَا تُغَالُوا بِصُدُقِ النِّسَاءِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَإِنَّهَا لَوْ كَانَتْ مَكْرُمَةً فِي الدُّنْيَا أَوْ تَقْوَى عِنْدَ اللَّهِ لَكَانَ أَوْلَاكُمْ بِهَا النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏مَا أَصْدَقَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ امْرَأَةً مِنْ نِسَائِهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَلَا أُصْدِقَتِ امْرَأَةٌ مِنْ بَنَاتِهِ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ثِنْتَيْ عَشْرَةَ أُوقِيَّةً .

Urdu Translation

ابوعجفاء سلمی کہتے ہیں کہ   عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے، اللہ ان پر رحم کرے، ہمیں خطاب فرمایا اور کہا: خبردار! عورتوں کے مہر بڑھا چڑھا کر مت باندھو اس لیے کہ اگر یہ ( مہر کی زیادتی ) دنیا میں باعث شرف اور اللہ کے یہاں تقویٰ اور پرہیزگاری کا ذریعہ ہوتی تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم اس کے زیادہ حقدار تھے، آپ نے تو اپنی کسی بھی بیوی اور بیٹی کا بارہ اوقیہ ( چار سو اسی درہم ) سے زیادہ مہر نہیں رکھا۔

English Translation

Abul Ajfa as-Sulami said: Umar (Allah be pleased with him) delivered a speech to us and said: Do not go to extremes in giving women their dower, for if it represented honour in this world and piety in Allah's sight, the one of you most entitled to do so would have been the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم. The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم did not marry any of his wives or gave any of his daughters in marriage for more than twelve uqiyahs.
