Ingredients
  1. 1 onion
  2. 2 green chillis
  3. 1-inch fresh root ginger
  4. 1 clove garlic
  5. 1 lb. minced beef
  6. 1 teaspoon ground coriander seeds
  7. 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  8. 1 teaspoon ground cummin seeds
  9. 2 teaspoons ground almonds
  10. 2 slices white bread, crumbed
  11. 1egg
  12. good squeeze of lemon juice salt to taste
  13. Oil for frying
  14. FOR THE CURRY
  15. 1 onion
  16. 2 green chillis
  17. 1-inch fresh root ginger
  18. 1 clove garlic
  19. oil for frying
  20. 1 tablespoon ground coriander seeds
  21. 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  22. 2 teaspoons ground cummin seeds ½ teaspoon chilli powder
  23. salt to taste
  24. ½ pint (U.S. 1 ¼ cups) water
  25. 1 oz. creamed coconut
  26. 4 curry or bay leaves
Method
  • Mince onion, chillis, ginger and garlic very finely and put in a bowl with all the other ingredients for the meat balls. Mix well and shape into small balls the size of a walnut. Heat some oil in a frying pan and fry meat balls till brown. Drain and keep aside. Now make the curry by finely mincing the onion, chillis, ginger and garlic separately. Fry the onion in a little oil till brown. Add the chillis, ginger and garlic, fry for 1-2 minutes and then add the dry spices and salt. Fry for five minutes, sprinkle with water and continue to fry for another five minutes. Add the water, creamed coconut and curry or bay leaves. Simmer for 20 minutes adding more water if necessary. Add the meat balls and cook for a further 10 minutes.
