'Bol' is Bold

(Talal Raza, Lahore)

While the movie Bol is making waves in the Pakistani film industry, as a responsible citizen, I feel it essential to convey my opinion over this movie.

Yes, to me, the movie Bol is quite Bold and there are certain reasons for that.

Firstly, I think, this the first movie I have seen that has used some really bold language. Words, that are obscene, have been thrown in different scenes, specifically when the scenes revolve around characters in Heera Mandi. It was something that I didn’t expect as a middle-class citizen, I think, I would be hard for me to accommodate those slangs when watching the movie with my family.

Secondly, the issues that have been targeted in the movie are rarely touched even in our classrooms. For instance, the way a transgender character is sexually assaulted or treated by the people around him. All these things were never targeted so openly than ever before.

Overall, I like the way the film conveys the message of the women empowerment. The film talks more of allowing women to make a difference in their lives. However, I feel that in an attempt to criticize Maulvi approach in Pakistani society, Shoaib Mansoor had gone too far. While the remaining characters definitely bring us closer to reality, the association of a poor Maulvi with religion and heera mandi at the same time didn’t make much sense to me. It looked like an attempt to criticize a Maulvi in the best possible way it could. I wonder how many Maulvi sahiban in Pakistan fall under the category of maulvi sahib shown in Bol. If Bol is based on the realities of life, it should be real. It shouldn’t be biased against a particular group.

In the end, I believe that Bol movie provides a great entertainment for mature audience. More or less, each dialogue was an attempt to give us a food for thought. The artistes have worked hard to make it a good source of entertainment for the audience. However, it was surprising to note that the role of Atif Aslam was not as dominant as I was expecting from the promos. Atif Aslam is playing more of supporting role than a main role. Anyhow, a good effort by him as well.
