Need of Volunteer-based Rural Development Actions: Revive Educational Activities in Flood Affected Areas

(Dr. Muhammad Iftikhar, Faisalabad)

Volunteerism is the pillar of community work for service provision in vulnerable and fragile conditions in rural areas. The service provision includes emergency services, health care activities, recovering education, and sustaining the environment (Stukas et al. 2005). It can boost resilience in rural areas through numerous services and other benefits (Nursey-Bray, et.al, 2022).
The current monsoon heavy rains in our country have caused serious damage at a large scale. The adverse weather conditions have not only destroyed the infrastructure but also made about 1500 human causalities. More than 2 million acres of crops and orchards have been impacted. Livelihoods of the communities are at severe risks. The human mobility to get to safer places has been severely affected as more than 3000 km of roads have been destructed (OCHA, 2022).
The education sector has also been equally affected with a reported damage of about 1180 schools. A considerable number of undamaged schools (5492 schools) have been used for accommodating the displaced persons (NDMA, 2022). The educational infrastructure is semi-damaged and non-functional in remote flood affected areas. A quick and prompt response is needed that will be possible with utilization of human and economic resources (USAID, 2022).
