Plantar Fasciitis
(Muhammad Siddiqui, Hyderabad)
Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. Pain is usually felt on anteromedial side of calcaneum.
Plantar fasciitis is caused by thickening and inflammation of the tissues on the sole of the foot, the plantar fascia.
The pain is typically worse when taking the first few steps of the day. However, pain decreases as the day progresses, but heel pain may return after long sedentary periods or following exercise, not during. This is because the plantar fascia stretches and lengthens with movement and tightens when inactive, causing the plantar fascia to become irritated or inflamed.
Plantar fasciitis is common in:
●Long distance runners, dancers and physically active men and women over 40.
●You are also at risk if you work a very active job which involves long periods of standing, such as working as a waiter or in a factory.
●Body weight can also place you at a greater risk of developing plantar fasciitis, as this can increase the stress and loading on structures of the foot, including the plantar fascia.
●Moreover uncomfortable footwear, walking on uneven surfaces etc can also lead to plantar fasciitis.
Management:
○Taping
○Cushioning
○Footwear suggestions, wearing shoes with good support and cushioning
○Strengthening and stretching exercises
○Therapeutic ultrasound
○Weight loss
○Orthotics (cushion heel)
