Technology plays an integral role in our daily lives, as we rely on it everywhere and anywhere. Navigating the balance between the need for connection and the adverse effect of excessive screen time can be challenging. The benefits or drawbacks of technology usage depend on how we employ it. While technology can potentially contribute to various mental health issues, it can positively impact human health by fostering a sense of community and social support, particularly for those who lack access to such resources.

The persuasive nature of technology in our daily lives underscores its significance. While technology facilitates connectivity, the delicate balance between its positive and negative effects of excessive usage presents a challenge. How we utilize technology determines whether it is a beneficial tool or a distraction. Its usage is associated with various mental health concerns. Prolonged use of technology frequently leads to eye strain, resulting in headaches and depression. Of note, this impact is prominent in younger individuals with teenagers distancing themselves from their environment. A 2017 study revealed that younger adults aged 19-32 who are engaged in the use of technology experience three times the level of social isolation and depression, compared to those who use social media less frequently.

The use of technology is associated with a variety of mental health issues. Overuse can lead to a range of health complications such as eyestrain, headaches, and even depression, particularly among the younger demographic. In most cases, technology and its counterparts do not bring on anxiety but increase the anxiety already present. The use of technology before going to bed can cause serious problems. This impact is due to the use of blue light on the phones. A 2014 study shows that blue light disturbs the natural circadian rhythm. It directly affects the brain and can damage retinal cells leading to vision problems like cataracts and cancer. Even our facial muscles get fatigued by squinting our eyes. Blue light should be avoided especially before going to bed.

The increasing reliance on technology is leading to a decrease in physical activity. As technology usage rises, people are becoming more sedentary, leading to health issues such as obesity, cardiovascular diseases, Type 2 diabetes. The way people use technology also contributes to incorrect posture. Research indicates that 38% of parents are concerned about their children not getting enough physical exercise due to excessive screen time. There is a need for a balanced approach between screen time and physical activity to address this issue.

It is essential to recognize that technology has both positive and negative effects. Identifying the advantages and disadvantages of technology is crucial to understanding its proper use. Avoiding excessive use of technology is necessary for the betterment of mental health. When feeling stressed, it is recommended to seek other productive outlets such as starting an exercise routine or interacting with others. If technology is adversely affecting mental health, seeing therapy from a professional can be beneficial in maintaining mental well-being.
