War and Religion

(Shahzaib Shaikh, Hyderabad)

Think for a moment, how war came into being? How a frenetic cult led to the destruction of humanity? And why Western minds always disdain Muslims? Hold your grip tightly to concise the answer by saying that this is the church which led to destruction, chaos, unfair judgment, catharsis, toothless laws, and many more. Let’s move back to 1095, where Pope Urban II initiated a two-centuries-long “holy war.” In the name of religion, 9 million people died, specifically damaging major cities like Antioch, Edessa, and Tripoli. However, they were manipulating minds, and in the “will of God,” they looted, besieged, destroyed agricultural lands, religious sites, and commerce, and practiced prostitution in their camps. It was the church’s crime against humanity due to its self-interest that Western minds commenced hating religion. Additionally, religion came to teach moral lessons, nothing to do against humanity, but such a disgusting idea crippled my mind that how the church can be so lethal to go beyond righteous norms.

It hasn’t completed here; moving forward, the German writer Arthur Schopenhauer wrote in the 1820s, “The fruit of Christianity were religious wars, butcheries, crusades, inquisition, extermination of the natives of America, and the introduction of African slaves in their place.” They have been doing genocide in the name of biblical prophecies, like how Iraq was destroyed in 2003 by a US frenetic cult. Libya, in 2011, the US intervened in political affairs and changed the regime by removing Muammar Gaddafi. Syria, in 2014, that event led to a humanitarian crisis. Yemen, the US indirectly supported Saudi Arabia, leading to a severe and chaotic crisis in Yemen. That’s not enough; long stories are holding back. The whimsical “President of the US” has given the title to war “US–Israel–Iran” as a religious war. On 7th March, evangelical leaders were standing around Trump in the White House to pray for giving him strength, but at the same time, in Epstein files, his name is mentioned as a pedophile and rapist. How such a cruel leader turned out to create a religious lobby.

In 2005, President George Bush said, “I’m driven with a mission from God. God would tell me, ‘George, go and fight with terrorists in Afghanistan. Go and end the tyranny in Iraq,’ so I did.” It might be shocking news for you that during the war, the US sent 200 troops using extremist Christian rhetoric to war. Furthermore, the operation name of Israel, “Rising Lions,” indicates a biblical context which goes like “Israel would rise like a lion from adversity.” If these are God’s divine plans, then would He like to have genocide in Gaza? Would He feel pleasure while looking at starving people? Six-year-old children are being killed in schools in Minab, Iran. Is this the ethics of war? I sadly say, absolutely not. Such events, violating international laws, are unacceptable. A few weeks ago, Trump allowed his troops to bring the Venezuela president without giving concern to state sovereignty. To cut it short, these issues are not based on war but on national interest. I conclude my piece of writing with Samuel Huntington’s idea when he disagreed with Fukuyama and said that “future wars would be fought not between countries but between cultures.” Cultures will be based upon language, customs, ethnicities, and most importantly, faiths.
