BIASED PAKISTANI MEDIA
(Hafiz Muhammad Noman, Karachi)
Pakistani TV channels recently
are criticizing a student union from Punjab University because some of the
students from the union pelt stones over Voice Chancellor’s office in Punjab
University. One TV channel specially highlighted the incident and taunted the
student union in particular whereas various guests including political leaders,
teachers and other personalities were invited to a program which was specially
designed on the issue and all the personalities castigated the union because
they all belonged to opposite parties of the student union. They said that the
students from the union intentionally pelt stones over the VC office whereas the
situation is totally different.
De facto the student union showed its aggression because one of the members of
the union was shot dead a few days ago who was sitting at a hotel and as it is
said that every action has a reaction, the student union reacted after losing
its member and we know that aggression is a natural thing. People everywhere in
the world show their aggression after any mishaps they face in which they either
lose someone or their belongings are hit or damaged. Aggression arouses people
to riot and they burn buses and other properties either governmental or private
in order to cope with their rage.
Doubtless, the students should not have pelt stones over the VC office and held
their rage but is it justification to castigate the student union again and
again? Is it the first incident in which students did so? Such incidents have
been taking place in the past by various political parties’ student unions not
only in Punjab University but in various universities and will be taking place
in future possibly but has someone ever listened that Pakistani TV channels have
highlighted other parties’ student unions in this way? I believe not! Because
this union never attacks on such TV channels’ offices whereas other student
unions know how to tackle such TV channels and they attack, even fire on such TV
channels. This is the reason that Media channels in Pakistan are biased.
There are a lot of incidents that students from various student unions
humiliated and manhandled teachers in University of Karachi but no programs were
aired concerning the issues because the channels knew that they could not take a
risk as they thought their lives depended on those student unions or their
parties. On the other hand, teachers themselves have lost their respect because
if teachers like Professor Iftikhar Baloch (who was involved in harassing and
assaulting girls sexually in Punjab University) exists, students will surely
forget to respect them and incidents to manhandle the teachers will be taking
place!
