Importance of Education

(Rana Saeed Ahmad, Lahore)

The scholars, educationists, writers and other people have said and written many things to tell the importance and need of education for individuals as well as nations. I also wish to highlight the significance and impact of education in my own way.
Heredity, observation, nurture, education, practice and experience are the main “Builders” of characteristics of personality, particularly knowledge, intelligence and wisdom. Every Builder has its own significance and impact but Education has superiority over the others. There are many reasons of this superiority but keeping in view the subject and occasion, I am going to explain only two of them.

The first reason of superiority is that education is “ The Fastest Way” to impart the knowledge, information and data, collected by mankind through hard work and struggle of many thousand years, to students within days, months or years as situation requires. For example, man was able to make Alphabet (Letters A to Z) after eighteen thousand years of understanding and efforts, but now we teach Alphabet to students within a few months or so. Similarly, man took more than eighteen thousand years to discover that the earth revolves around the sun, but through education we tell our students this fact in a couple of days. In this way, thousands principles, rules and formulas of all branches of science are taught to pupils in very short time.

The second reason of superiority is that “The Acquisition of Education is Very Easy”. Age, gender, time, place, family and its responsibilities, etc. are not hurdles. In this regard, I give full assurance that if you truly decide to get education and stand firm with the decision, showing determination and fortitude, you must succeed, no matter what is your gender, age, job or status, etc. To straighten my assurance here is an example of my own experience of acquisition of education.

I passed 7th class until I was directed by my father to leave the school and go to shop. I obeyed the direction. Within a period of one year, I learnt many affairs of family business of gold. Soon, I was put in marriage at the age of 16 years. By the passage of six years, I was father of three daughters and was running my separate business.

However, I was conscious of my inadequate education. Many times, I left depressed, disheartened and dejected over my poor education. In fact, the idea of inadequate education had made me sick. After consideration of many months, I made up my mind to restart education. I bought necessary books and started preparation to appear in Matriculation Examination. Some relatives showed surprise while many others said, “Rana Saeed Ahmad has gone mad”. However, I did not mind and carried on my preparation for the examination. I kept working on the shop during day and managed studying at night while playing and laughing with my wife and children. So much so, I appeared in examination and got first division within one year.

Then I got admission in Municipal College Faisalabad and passed I Com. After that, I got degree of bachelor of Art/B.A. by appearing as a private student and thereafter, I obtained degree of L.L.B. as a student of Law College Lahore. In this way, I covered the journey of education from 7th class to the graduation of law in about 6 years and became an advocate. It is matter of interest to mention here that during that period I managed to carry on my business regularly and earned a lot of money, while my wife remained busy in her home-works and made me father of 6 children.

So I say with full confidence that education is “The Fastest Way” to impart the knowledge, information and data and that “The Acquisition of Education is Very Easy”

My 6 years education opened a new era of knowledge, wisdom, feelings and awareness for me. It broke the shell of selfishness and made me able to see beyond self-interests and comforts. By virtue of education I was able to understand, firstly, why People of Pakistan have failed to establish a welfare state and secondly the real cause of failure is “The Low Level of Intelligence of People”.
