Education vs Experience.
(Syed Musarrat Ali, Karachi)
Subject is a very old debate
and will go on till one proves as a specific case but still will not be
applicable as a formula in general.
Dr. Syed Mubin Akhter (Managing Director, Karachi Psychiatric Hospital Pakistan)
is a highly educated person but I visited him after 1982 to observe the impact
of experience. As a Journalist keeping the norms of ethics I cannot name in
comparison but after meeting with a number of persons related to this field, I
can state that Dr. Mubin's experience of 45 years overshadows his education. His
patience of listening others indicates that he keeps his priority no.1 as a good
listener without interruption and at the end gives his comments on diagnosis.
Cross questioning begins later but very brief and counselling is further too
short to avoid any reaction of the visitor to help him settle down and bring him
in to relaxed state of mind which is the basis of Psychotherapy. This phenomenon
is not written in books but is a reflection of years of experience. Another very
important factor comes out of this approach is that he is not after money as all
others counts minutes in dollars even in Pakistan. This ideology is a true
picture of his service to Humanity and on ground he is taking care of almost all
types of mental abnormalities. I am very much pleased to learn that he is the
only one who accepts the reality that every person is suffering from Bi-polar
Psychosis but in response to my argument, his explanation was an extremely
pleasant knowledge that I treat Abnormal Behavior of a Bi-polar person and not a
person with Normal Behavior. This statement is an extract of his long experience
of interaction with patients which cannot be compared to a person possessing
Higher Educational Degrees and young age practice.
