Karachi is Pakistan’s most
important city and a hub of industrial activities. The discharge produced by the
industries is making the sea water poisonous. About 400 million gallons of this
industrial waste is dumping into the sea on daily basis. Only Karachi produces
80 million gallons of industrial waste daily which has made the sea water
polluted for us and for the marine life. Various industries and factories are
responsible for such a big amount of toxic wastes entering the sea. Several
species have become extinct in the harbor’s water over the years because of
increasing pollution and industrial contamination.
This is an alarming situation for the concerned authorities. There is a dire
need for industrial waste treatment plants so that these wastes should not be
dumped into the sea directly. The city district government Karachi has planned
to build four treatment plants but they are short in funds. These treatment
plants are very essential to cope up with the grave environmental problems
caused by the polluted sea water.
There is a need for crucial steps taken by the concerned authorities and
industries as well to recycle these wastes and avoid it going into the sea water
directly as it may cause severe dangers to human lives and environment.
