The factors which makes our
planet the brightest among all the planets of the Milky way is water.
Before trees were common the earth was covered with giant mushrooms. Earth has
almost 500 volcanoes worldwide.
Earth have twin planet, named Theia. Some 4.5 billion years ago, a planetary
body which was postulated to be large as the Mars, shared the same orbit with
earth and Theia transpired soon after which resulted in the formation of the
moon.
If you drilled a tunnel straight through earth and jumped in, it would take you
about 42 minutes to get to the other sides.
It is estimated that the core temperature of the earth is between 5000 to 7000
degree celsius. It is just as hot as the sun's surface too !
Earth's water was initially trapped within the planet. Over time the earth's
water was brought to the surface by the planet's volcanic activity.
The earth isn't round. The accurate description of the earth's figure is oblate
spheroid. This means that it is spherical, but also flattened from its too
opposite poles.
The earth surface rotates on its axis at 1000 miles per hour. Consequently the
planet travels through space at 66700 miles per hour. But how come we don't feel
that our planet is moving at a dizzing rate ? This is due to the fact that the
earth is rotating at a constant speed and is partly due to the gravitational
pull of earth.
A year on earth lasts just over 365 days. It is actually 1/4 of a day over 365
days which is why we have a leap year every four years.
On that note, Antarctica contains about 70% of earth's fresh water and 90% of
its ice.
There are about 7500,000,000,000,000,000 grains of sand on the on earth.
There are more living organisms in a teaspoonful of soil than there are people
on earth.
This means that due to gravity pull you are technically lighter or heavier in
certain locations in the globe, though you will never feel it.
Gravity is not distributed equally. Places like Hudson Bay in Canada actually
have lass gravity than other regions of the globe. This is due to the fact that
their is less land mass in that part of the planet thanks both to retreating
glaciers on the surface and swirling magma deep in the core .
We have approximately 24 hours in a day but it is expected that after about 250
million years, a day will last 1.5 hours longer due to the slower rotation of
the earth around its axis.
